Lornn L Laughlin of Goodman Kansas says private enterprise makes Vernal City Uintah County and nearby areas the most progressive. He won rights to serve Vernal City and Uintah County and cities Moab Monticello and San Juan County. Utah Gas Service Company plans to absorb the franchise and transfer the certificate. Laughlin has 28 years in natural gas and runs Goodland Natural Gas in Kansas plus seven other towns.

Two Forest Fires Ravage 250 Acres of Timber
Proof of the highly inflam mable conditions of our forest was furnished Wednesday when 80 men fought an 150-acre inferno in Bear Wallow north of Altonsh, all through the night. Basin Flying Service dropped breakfast to the crew Thursday morning by parachute which was provided by Jim's fe. A further fire was reported on Mosby Mountain where 100 acres of timber was going up in flames. Reports early Thursday said that both blazes were under control.

Vernal Residents Brush With Death On Highway 40
A weekend spate of crashes on Highway 40 near Vernal left three cars and two trucks involved. Lorin L Atwood 51 suffered broken ribs facial lacerations and shock amid a heart condition. Samuel B Woolley bishop of Vernal Third Ward sustained broken ribs and was released home. a pipeline truck crushed Woolley’s cab as both occupants were knocked unconscious. A Sunday collision west of Vernal injured Ivan V Sheffer and Lorin L Atwood among others while Byard Tamsey drove the pipeline truck.

Vernal Amateur Rodeo Draws Thousands for Weekend Show
The two day event drew about 5000 attendees including Uintah Basin residents and tourists. Sponsored by Jensen Ward building fund committee, the rodeo raised 57500 for a new chapel. Total prize money reached 1837.50, the largest ever for this rodeo. There were 209 contestants.

An intermountain field meeting of foresters and range management groups will be held in Vernal in August with about 75 attendees, including plane trips over Edio Park Dam. The fish in Oaks Park are dying likely from a disease. the Fish and Wildlife committee will investigate. Senator Watkins was to visit Utah weekend and meet groups. Drought noted on lands under the Highline Canal. a Steinaker Draw reservoir was proposed to help alleviate conditions.

Sparse opening trip as High Uintas see few anglers
Weather and heavy snow closed many routes with only three or four fishing parties seen. Udell Gardiner reports 9 to 12 inch rainbow and brook trout caught, while planted creeks and forks hold strong but losses at Oaks Park reduce totals. Officials plan further planting before July 4, but low water and winter freezes hit stocks hard.
