Hitchhiker at County Jail Takes Life

The body of Louis Kenneth Hindmarsh, 16, son of Binley Hindmarsh of Springville, was found hanging by belts from cage bars in a county jail cell. An inquest found death by strangulation with no determination of intent. Hindmarsh had recently been paroled from the Brave Industrial School at Oden and had a troubled prior conduct history. He was a Springville High School student active in music, a Boy Scout, with a sister Ethelyn and brother John Robert.

Funeral for Mrs. McLeod Held at Glines

Funeral services for Mrs Mary G McLeod were held at the ward chapel on Sunday following her death Friday after a brief illness. Bishop John B Eaton officiated with mixed chorus and Enid Reid on piano. Speakers included Archie Wallace Johnson and Bishop Faton. Burial was at Maeser Cemetery under Lawin Funeral Home direction. Mrs McLeod, born July 2 1850 in Terre Haute Indiana, lived in San Francisco during the earthquake period and later moved to Vernal. She returned to Vernal about ten years ago and lived there until her death. survived by two sisters Mrs Drullard and Mrs Batkrtsfield.

Lyle Johnson Funeral Held Saturday

Funeral for John Lyle Johnson held at Vernal first ward chapel with Bishop John Hair presiding. Service featured local choruses, speakers praising Johnson’s character, and a large crowd filling the chapel and adjoining spaces. Interment at Maeser cemetery by Swain Funeral Home.

Funeral Rites for Bert Singleton Held on Thursday

Albert Singleton died Tuesday after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held in the Maeser chapel with Bishop Bing ham officiating. Interment followed in Maeser cemetery. Attending mourners came from Provo, Midvale, Roosevelt, and Salt Lake City among others.

State awards road oil contract for 171 miles in Strawberry Valley

Wrong and Grant of Springville led nine bidders on a road oiling contract for 176 miles of U 8 41 from Daniels to Fruitland. The lowest bid was 4,211,080 dollars, with 0 percent added for engineering and contingencies, totaling about 4,632,000 dollars. The already graded and graveled section will reduce US 40 near Salt Lake to seven miles without ductless surface, in the Daniels Prosperity area.

Denver Men Buy Uintah Railway Line

Denver men Arthur T Horr and Meyer Quid sttin of Denver announced they purchased the abandoned Uintah Railway in western Colorado and eastern Utah with Barber Asphalt of Perth Amboy New Jersey. The 75 mile line will be scrapped and the Gilsonite freight moved by trucks. a prior Denver Rio Grande Western bid failed. The line ran from Atchee to Watson Utah, with survey and construction history noted, including Baxter Pass and steep grades. eleven miles of track were completed before delays and eventual closure.

Lizzie Ashton Succumbs After Session at Cooking School

Elizabeth Marshall Ashton died Wednesday after a session at the cooking school and hospitalization including two blood transfusions. Funeral services will be held Friday at 4 PM at the Vernal Firestone chapel with Bishop John Hair leading and Den B Colton, former congressman, and H Walter Woolley as speakers. Survived by husband Lynn Ashton, daughter Mira Ethelynne A Anderson, step-daughter Mrs William Reynolds, two brothers Henry and Robert Marshall, and other relatives. Born January 27, 1809, in Panguitah, she moved to Ashley Valley as a child.

Electric Cooking Show At Uintah High Frid ay and Sat

A large group of women attended the cooking school at Uintah High on Friday and Saturday. Miss Evelyn Hansen of Provo demonstrated electric cooking methods and cost saving tips with Mrs Gertrude Wiseman assisting. Saturday featured a talk on proper use of household electric appliances by Charles Sessions of Provo Power Company. Over forty prizes were awarded, including a grand electric roaster won by Mrs John Ashby. Lions and Junior Chamber to Play Ball on Burros

Vernal fair grounds host a novelty baseball game with Lions and Junior Chamber squaring off against Ballon Burros mounted on 27 trained burros. Players will ride burros while only pitcher and catcher remain on foot, with a movie-trained animal lineup supplementing the field. Mrs Lois Trim Buried in San Diego California

Mrs Lois Trim daughter of Jacob Workman died at her home in San Diego California June 16 at age 5. She was mother of Delos P Mra Lois M Combs Mrs Estella Button Mrs Virtu Couts Mrs Tonta Base Mra Phila Gubert and Mre Alto Dear. Funeral services were held June 9. Mrs Trim was wife of Solomon P Trim and formerly resided in Ashley Valley.

Weeks Chosen President of Vernal Rodeo Board

Alvin E Weeks was elected president of the Vernal Rodeo executive committee at a Bank of Vernal meeting, succeeding Joe Douglas who resigned after moving from Vernal. DeVere Carroll became vice president, with James Mor dl and George Roth as directors. Weeks, longtime rodeo vice president, has led various rodeo roles since inception and also presided over the Dinah Basin Livestock Show for two years. The board plans another car giveaway to boost ticket sales and considers major improvements to sale grounds, barns, and sheds. The next board meeting is July 10. CoR Henderson, brother of W Henderson of Davenport, Iowa, is visiting Vernal for a month.

Bonneville Unit Discusses Basin Project

A Bonneville drainage basin committee meeting in the capital outlined tentative plans for a Colorado River Great Basin project. Ora Bundy and Selahs H. Kimball described surveys and near ready water site filings for diverting Colorado River water west of the Wasatch into the Great Basin. The project would coordinate federal and state agencies, with national resources committee involvement, as it continues surveys and studies.

Leeton Farmer Workman Dies Sunday in Utah

Leeton resident Joseph Francis Workman 4 died Sunday at his brother’s Vernal home after a long life in Ashley Valley and Leeton. Born in Virgin City of Washingt county Utah, he was a farmer and stockman.
