Governor Henry H Blood will attend the Uintah Basin Industrial Convention on August 11 and speak at 1 0 pm after a reception. The program includes Indian and Scout pageantry, bands, and historical displays, marking his first appearance as governor at UBIC events.
Vernal residents celebrate St Marys Salt Lake graduation results with Miss Ferm Odelick and Miss Eunice Jorgensen among others. Elisha Campbell to oversee public school building in Roosevelt. Ed Harmston surveys Green River Canyon for a potential railroad, financing by Baron Von Horst. Marriage notices include Arthur Watkins and Andrea Rich, and Florence Billings with Hyrum Baird. Walter Adams of Provo and C W Simpson of Salt Lake City visited Vernal to review the newly installed cast iron pipe for the waterworks system. Adams said Vernal set a world first by installing the 12 inch pipe using the standard green sand casting method, with fourteen carloads already used in replacements. St George previously received Pacific Cast Iron Pipe and plans to convert fully to cast iron in about three years.
Van Massey promotes a July Fourth boxing and wrestling card at Uintah High School Auditorium to raise funds for the First Ward Chapel. Many participants offer free exhibitions to support the cause. cash donations and produce contributions will be accepted to meet the appeal.
Naples resident Merrill Goodrich wins a $25 prize in the Lewis Motor naming contest for the new hotel service station midway between Vernal’s Commercial and Gibson hotels. Thomas Barren notes the entry reflects locale and the station will be branded Hotel Service Station. About 500 couples attended a free dance at Docs Beach with additional prize giveaways.
H J McKean Inc secures the contract to rebuild the Vernal 1st Ward chapel after a fire. Architects Anderson and Young of Salt Lake City prepared plans for two large additions, with a total reconstruction cost around 28000 dollars. Foreman Fa Cable heads preliminary work and expects rapid completion.
A Saturday dawn fire completely destroys the Shelton home near Vernal on the Lapoint Vernal road. Mrs Bus Hatch and companions noticed the blaze as Myr Sehilton and family slept in tents nearby. Firefighters from Vernal could not reach the scene in time, and efforts to save the structure failed. Personal effects from the Sheltons and Dr Nelson family were saved, with partial insurance reported.
A fifteen member Uintah county delegation led by commissioners and officials met Governor Henry Blood and the state road commission in Salt Lake City to push a $4 194 708 public works grant. Main projects include US 49 oiling to the Utah Colorado line, Vernal Duchesne secondary road completion via De LaPoint, Dinosaur approach road, Vermal Manila highway widening, Jensen bridge removal, and Hil Creek to US 40 improvement. Dave Pike a steel worker on the bridge across Green River plunged into the water when a wrench slipped from a bolt he was tightening on a lower girder. He escaped by grabbing a guy rope and climbing to safety. The next day Bess Miner, 12, nearly drowned while wading near the east shore but was rescued from under Squaw bushes with only fright and strangulation.
A benefit event for the Vernal First ward chapel fund will take place at Imperial hall Friday night. Organized by Relief Societies of the Vernal First and Second wards under Mrs Elgan Davis, the program features a chorus harmonica music an act play Alta Fox solo Ada Winder readings and more including piano Soo vocal solo Meda Walker charts demonstrations and dancing.
Davis Ward hosts a town Fourth of July program starting at 1100 with a boxing card and baseball games. An all ages dance at night caps the day to raise funds for a new chapel.

Manager Paul L. Cowan confirms Mountain States Telephone will begin building near the United Bank on Vernal Avenue to convert Vernal exchange to air electric at about 16000. The project includes 375 phones and a new one story brick stucco building with a warehouse and a central energy type system. Completion expected by November. Roosevelt exchange recently completed with new offices and outside plant.
Government entomologists from the United States Department of Agriculture in Salt Lake City developed a method to predict next year’s weevil damage by counting adult weevils per square foot in fall hay fields. The study shows thresholds from 44 weevils per sq ft for no damage to 16 weevils per sq ft for possible damage, with weather and field conditions shaping outcomes.
Seven Vernal high school musicians, chosen for the Intermountain High School band, will join concerts in Logan Ogden and Salt Lake City on July 1 and 2. The group, from Utah Idaho Montana Colorado Wyoming and California, will unveil marching demonstrations under Forest McAllister.
