Vernon residents mourn state representative W Stan Ashton who died suddenly at 12 15 am after angina pectoris. Born May 29 1871 in Pleasant Grove Utah he helped build early Ashley Valley commerce and served as a key merchant and farmer before his election to public office.

Fourth of July at Bullionville CCC Camp Pleasant despite many away

Civilian Conservation Corps personnel at Bullionville marked the Fourth with a holiday rest period and a turkey dinner. A group from Carbon county joined locals for a Vernal boxing show and a Naples baseball clash won 12 10. Crew members returned to work on the Fort Thornburg road and reported good progress and fishing at La Brush Creek amid rising boxing and baseball prospects.

Dyer Mine Yields Fortune in Copper

The Dyer mine established in 1883 by U. F. Dyer yielded copper fortune. Bullensville grew with 100 workers from 1900 to 1902 but by 1904 ore pockets exhausted. Parsons City, another local camp, prospered. Miss Edith Williams, daughter of Mr and Mrs Williams, visited friends and relatives in Vernal this week.

Cherokee Massey Wins Match at Benefit Bout

Cherokee Massey headlines a Fourth of July benefit boxing card at Vernal High School promoting a Vernal First Ward fund. Massey defeats Curly Miller for a decisive win after two knockdowns in the fifth, with strong body work and quick footwork. Boy Scout Council Meeting Postponed to July 10

The Uintah district of the Timpanogos Council postponed its regular meeting to Monday evening at 7 pm due to limited attendance. An extra session will finalize plans for the annual Scout outing July 17 to 21 in the high Uintahs near Moon Lake. Ray Duke, district chairman, expects many Scouts and scouters from Uintah County to attend.

Bishop and Mrs Wallis Sail for Homeward Voyage

Bishop James H Walls and Mrs Wallis will sail from England on July 20 aboard the SS Washington. They plan to return in time for Uintah stake fall conference August 5th and 6th. Wallis served 26 months in the British Mission with Mir Wallis as Patriarch and Mrs Wallis as Relief Society Counselor.

Uintah Basin Asphaltura backed for U S 40 by Vernal Council

The Vernal City Council urged use of rock asphalt in Uintah Basin road work and on projects funded by the Presidents Roosevelt make work appropriation. They favored local asphalt use to develop markets and provide employment while enforcing water ordinances and authorizing water shutoffs to protect supply. A $1 reactivation fee was approved.

Civic Clubs push Vernal to Salt Lake mail route change

At a special meeting in Heber City members of Associated Civic Clubs of Eastern Utah urged the post office to switch Uintah Basin mail flow from Price and Indian Canyon to Salt Lake City and the Strawberry route. Inspectors C F Dutton and O A Keen visited Vernal, noting improved delivery would aid rush orders and reduce road costs by using US 40 to Uintah Basin.

Basin Asphalt May Be Used in Utah Make Work Program

Part of Utahs four million dollar share of the national recovery highway fund may go to the Uintah Basin through rock asphalt purchases. The plan, backed by Uintah officials, may substitute Uintah Basin rock for oil mulch on road projects as costs rise. Federal approval and Roosevelt's 400 million dollar highway appropriation loom, with rules mandating 30 hour weeks and minimal convict labor.

Government to place 1300 Utah men in Co. C. G.

The Forest Service regional office announced 1300 additional Utah men will be enrolled in Co. C. G. to fill Western state quotas as part of a 3500 man recruitment across Nevada Idaho and Utah. Enrollees must be unemployed aged 18 to 25 with some mountain or forest work experience.
