Stringham Named as State Senate Candidate in Vernal

B H Stringham a Vernal businessman and Civic leader, announced as candidate for State Senator. He chairs the 21 County Committee and pushes for Central Utah Project and water resources, road building in Eastern Utah, and Echo Park Dam. His wife Catherine Chipman and six children noted. J B Douglas from Greybull Wyoming visited for the Vernal Rodeo with daughter Carolyn, former Greybull Rodeo queen.

Eisenhower Invited to Vernal Amateur Rodeo Show

The Vernal Roping Club hosts a two day Amateur Rodeo July 4 and 5 spotlighting cool night shows. Josie Morris, at 79 the world’s oldest queen, will reign and ride in the grand entry. Saddle bronc, bareback, team roping, ribbon retrieving, cutting, bull riding, wild horse race and calf roping are featured. Twenty Florida calves are used, with $1000 in prize money and age limits only for those over the queen, unless with a parent. Practice roping starts July 11 at the fairgrounds.

Man Stabbed in Brawl at Local Tavern

Arlo Sheldon of Riverton Wyoming was stabbed in the stomach during a Vernal beer tavern argument with E. E. Rushing of Tallulah Louisiana. Rushing was arrested after a chase, booked overnight, and bound over to district court on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Both men worked at an oil rig near Vernal and had come to town together.

Ivins Seeks Fourth Judicial District Attorney Post

Heber G. Ivins of American Fork Utah announces candidacy for district attorney in the Fourth Judicial District. A Utah native and BYU Law graduate 1949, Ivins served in World War II as an intelligence investigator. He now practices in Salt Lake and Utah counties and is a reserve Air Force officer and American Fork Junior Chamber of Commerce president. He is married with three daughters and was formerly president of the Young Democrats in Salt Lake County.

Highway 40 resurfacing planned near Bridgeland Duchesne

Utah road work totaling twelve million dollars will fund a 9.2 mile resurfacing between Duchesne and Bridgeland in Duchesne County and a six mile section east of Heber has already been resurfaced. An additional 45 mile segment from Salt Lake City to Parleys Canyon is slated for work.

Vernal Jaycees win first place for sports program

Vernal's Junior Chamber of Commerce earned first place at the 52d United States Junior Chamber of Commerce convention for sports activities. The local group also placed second in mimeographed publications and third in Americanism, with Darren Wardle chairing the winning sports committee that organized Rex Layne boxing, tennis court projects, Basin tournament, and Kid's Day.

Auto Collision Tuesday Causes $600 Damages

Joseph Collier driving west lost control near Naples on Highway 40 and struck a parked car owned by Orvil Merrell causing an estimated 600 dollars in damages. Collier was uninjured and no other persons or vehicles were involved. Road crews plan rapid realignment with bypasses as winter and spring conditions delay resurfacing.

Group to Place Tourists in Private Homes

An association of hotel and motel operators in Vernal will coordinate private home lodging for visitors when hotels cannot accommodate all travelers. Isle R Hopkins, secretary, says the plan covers nights with excess crowds and will involve locating, inspecting and making rooms available for touring guests arriving during the peak season.

Fort Duchesne Woman Injured in Road Mishap

Fort Duchesne resident Ida B. Elli, 66, was injured in a highway crash on U S Highway 40 near Daniela Canyon Monday afternoon. Her car left the roadway and overturned after slowing for a road construction zone. Ellis, a resident of Fort Duchesne’s Indian Reservation, sustained scalp wounds and was treated at Heber City hospital.

Funeral for Lorenzo Young Held at Maeser Chapel

Funeral services for Lorenzo Young were held at Maeser Ward Maeser Chapel in Provo. The Utah native died at Utah Valley Hospital after a short illness at age 77, two days after his birthday, leaving several survivors including sons Norm and John LeGrand and daughter Neldon Nielsen. He lived in Draper before moving to Provo area a year ago and was survived by multiple relatives. He was born January 20, 1884, in Bountiful and had long ties to Uintah and Ashley Valleys. The service followed a burial in Maeser Cemetery.

Vernal lodging plan to aid travelers in city

The arrangement will use rooms at the Hotel Vernal and the Commercial Hotel and Grill to intercept travelers. Families hosting tourists pay a lodging fee and a 25 cent service charge goes into a fund to improve tourist approaches. Officers include Clayton Simmons and Ralph Frescent, with Hopkins leading the association and sponsorship from the Chamber of Commerce.

Sim Ross Dies Wednesday of Long Illness

William Simpson Ross 75 retired cattleman died Wednesday afternoon at a local hotel from lingering illness. He was born March 29 187 srr at Stephen and Generbe Elton Mons Jen Ross in Walsburg Utah. He married Myrtle Whightman Ross in October 1902 at Price. Surviving: widow two sons Reed and Keith Ross Vernal nine daughter Mrs James Fausett Price two brothers Forest Ross Vernal Warren Ross Santa Ana California and seven grandsons.
