Scout Camp Opens Monday at High Uinta

Two hundred scouts and leaders from Vernal Duchesne and Roosevelt districts of Utah National Parks Council will open the 1958 High Uinta Scout Camp at McKee Draw on Monday. Camp director Valving Gaudio assisted by planner chair Tigle Molgate will lead a large senior staff including James E Bacon Spencer Squire and LaTrell Anderson with many others handling health safety hospitality and activities as morning advancement work aims to award second class and first class badges. Six junior staff explorers from Arcadia Roosevelt Maeser and Verna join the week of games merit badges and field sports for a busy program slated to continue through the day with page 8 continuation.

Swiss Girl Sets Vernal Visit As Exchange Event

Arriving in Vernal Saturday from Switzerland, Miss Adelheid Veronika Finsler, 29, will stay with the Dee Jenkins family in Maeser under the International Farm Youth Exchange program. She holds six years of college, has studied farming and homemaking, and will speak at the Vernal Lions Club and address the Uintah County Dairy Association at Merkley Park on June 25.

A 12 year old Glines youth suffered head cuts and bruises when struck by a car Monday at 2 23 pm one mile west of Vernal Rand Murray rode a bicycle west on US 40 turning left across the highway and was hit by a Plymouth driven by Guy Fergu son 46 of Salinas California He was taken to hospital with scalp lacerations and released No citations were issued according to Lt Sammy Tate of the Highway Patrol who investigated

Utah School Budget Hearing Set For June 30

The District Board of Education in Utah will meet Monday June 30 at 1 30 pm to revise the 1957 58 school budget and hold a hearing on the proposed 1958 59 budget. The board aims to finalize adoption at this session and invites all interested to attend. That evening candidates for the Ashley Valley Junior High principalship will be interviewed with a selection expected at that time.

Reclamation awards Flaming Gorge Dam contract

The Bureau of Reclamation awarded Arch Dam Constructors of Omaha the prime contract for Flaming Gorge Dam. The joint venture led by Peter Keiwit & Long posted the low bid of $29,002,497 at the Manila bid opening June 10. The project, with bids up to $50 million, is to be completed in five years.

Vernal Men Hurt After Fall From Oil Tank Roof

Two Vernal men, Ernest Caldwell and his son Dale aged 13, were injured Tuesday at 3:30 pm when they fell 16 feet into an oil storage tank during an inspection. They had unbolted part of the roof to repurpose the tank as an incinerator at the local lumber mill.

Hopkins Eyes 5th Term as Utah Representative

Clair R Hopkins, a Utah House member, announced intent to run for a fifth term. He has served as assistant floor leader and chaired the highways committee, with roles on appropriations and the legislative council. Lions Club mass hypnotism show set for Uintah High

Vernal Lions sponsor a June 2021 hypnotism event at Uintah High School auditorium featuring Merlin the Hypnotist and Erna the Princess of Magic. Bid Opening Set July 1 On Dam Access Section

State Road Commission will open sealed bids July 1 in Salt Lake City for a 4.429 mile paved Vernal Mantfia to Flaming Gorge dam access road. The project, part of a $1,000,000 dam program, replaces 22 miles of road with a 24 percent mix surface plan. The bid includes 780 tons of bituminous material 87 900 tons of gravel and 159 000 cubic yards of excavation with completion in 160 working days.

Race Meet and Pony Express Draws Record Crowd Downtown

Vernal crowds filled downtown venues over Thursday to Saturday for the Race Meet and Pony Express from Green River Wyoming. A $4000 purse race showcased Log owned by Roy Showalter versus Holey Sox owned by Woodey B Searle, with Holey Sox winning by two lengths under jockey Kay Conyers, a 17 year old from Hayden. Calf roping and Shetland pony events drew families and local youngsters into the weekend festivities.

Corner Stone Laying for Uintah County Building Held

Corner stone laying ceremonies for the Uintah County building occurred Wednesday night with Uintah High School Band performances and color posting. Chairman Grville Swain welcomed guests as Major Lester R Miratic and Lorenze Young spoke. W Russell Todd reported on inspector duties. Curtis Dudky discussed facade and preparation. Grant Southam and Ken Sowards forecast county progress. The cornerstone was laid with a historical scroll, and the building cost is $400,000. The 49 rooms include offices and a wing to feed 20 inmates, with 20,030 square feet of floor space and summer cooling provisions.
