Vernal summer programs plan sports art and boating
Vernal area summer offerings include swimming golf art and teen instruction under Uintah Recreation Committee director Rondon Harmon. Activities start with adult swim Monday at 5 pm and free golf art and archery classes are planned with registration help from Harmon and local teachers. A three day pony express and mini rodeo event features a 123 mile relay from Green River to Vernal with races daily and safety guidance for spectators. Miss Kaye Kenney won a BYU drama scholarship through Uintah High School activities.

Vernal Project Contract Signed In Washington
Sen Arthur W Watkins reported he testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee on water resource development funds urging a 9 1 million in each for the Vernal and Paonia units to start construction this fall. The Uintah Conservancy District repayment contract was approved by Secretary Seaton, clearing the last hurdle before congressional funding. Len Walking said the project is over the final preconstruction checks. Utah's senior senator spoke to back Vernal and other Utah projects.

Uintah School District Board tentatively adopts a 1 189 702 80 dollar budget for 1958 59, down slightly from 1957 58, and approves a building reserve fund of about 80 000. Maintenance and operation levy set at 2135 mills and capital outlay debt service and reserve fund at 14 rails for a total 35 35 mills, compared to 34 41 this year. Final budget hearing scheduled for Monday June 30 at 8 30 pm at the Board of Education office with invites to the public. The board also considers nine applicants for Ashley Valley Junior High principal and will interview three after the budget hearing.

Vernal to Iaming Gorge Access Nears With New 4.3 Mile Strip
The Utah State Road Commission proposed a 4.3 mile extension from Greendale Junction toward Flaming Gorge Dam site doubling the initial plan. The 43 mile route aims to connect Vernal with the dam area to supply manpower and materials for the multi million dollar project. Bids open June 24 with estimated cost over 300000 and potential ties to a cofferdam and a link to Dutch John across the dam.

Arch Dam constructors of Omaha led bids for Flaming Gorge Dam and powerhouse at Manila High School gym. The low bid of 29,002,497 was about 1,000,000 above the 25,889,667 engineer estimate, with Morrison Knudsen and others as partners. Final award hoped by June 30 to Bureau headquarters in Washington.

Uintah Dairy Princess contest set for June Dairy Day
Linford Batty chairs the Uintah County Dairy Princess contest to be held June 28 at Merkley Park from 11 am to 3 pm during Dairy Day. The event, announced after a June 9 meeting at the Uintah County courthouse, will select the princess by popular vote as dairy men and their families gather for the celebration with sports, food and activities.

Very Good Fishing Season Opening Noted Last Weekend
One of the best fishing openings on record was noted last weekend throughout the Uintah Basin with many anglers catching Hindly within an hour or two. Over 200 fishermen were counted on Moon Lake averaging over seven fish per angler. Paradise Park and Blywberry Reservoir reported very good to excellent catches despite high water and wind.
