Lynn Pope Commissioned At Ft Belvoir Virginia

Lynn Pope was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Engineers Corps at Fort Belvoir Virginia after completing a twelve week officers training course. He is the son of Charles T Pope and enlisted in the National Guard unit here in 1939. He attended USAC at Logan, first stationed at San Luis Obispo, later transferred to Fort Lewis Washington as a technician sergeant, embarked for foreign service, stationed in the Flawnton Islands until March 194? when selected for officer candidate school and returned to the United States.

Valley Pioneer Celebrates 83rd Birthday on Coast

Isaac Burton known as Uncle Ike to Ashley Valley residents quietly celebrates his 83rd birthday at his niece’s home in Los Angeles. Burton arrived in Jensen in November 1877 and helped his brothers operate the Jensen ferry. He recalls early territorial troubles and meetings with frontier figures like Mike Flynn and Buckskin Ed. After marrying Anne Frisby he entered cattle business for twenty years and remained civically active until his wife’s death, living in Los Angeles since then.

Verdent Valley youths join Marines in wartime service

Five Vernal youths, Liont Richards Dale Stewart Brevert and three more, were accepted into the US Marine Corps after passing field physicals. Richards is son of Mr and Mrs Bird Richards, while Dale Stewart is son of Mr and Mrs G Ramsey Brevert. Joe Welland, a Pacific theater veteran, is on leave awaiting San Diego training. Services Held Monday for Robert Hunting

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon for Robert Nathan Hunting who died Friday from injuries when his horse reared and fell on him. Interment was at Vernal Memorial Park. Hunting was a rancher and farmer, former president of Ashley Reservoir Co and Ashley Upper Irrigation Co, survived by his widow Lile Richens Hunting, a son, a daughter, his mother, six sisters, two brothers, and numerous relatives.

Milking Shorthorns Bought From Canadian and Idaho Herds

Collett and son Vene returned from the Northwest after visiting many Milking Shorthorn herds. They purchased calves from the Geo Jackson herd of Ontario and from Cran Clay Gloria, mother of their herd bull. Calves were bought from Ghost Hart, North View herd, Buhl Idaho. The trip noted crops fair overall though wet weather slowed harvest, beans and potatoes in places.

Fire destroys Fountain Cafe in Monday blaze

A Monday night blaze gutted the Alexi Fountain Cafe, destroying the cafe interior and adjoining buildings. Firefighters saved the Main theatre. total property damage estimated at 10,000 dollars for the building and 1,000 dollars for contents. The cafe owner plans to reopen at a new location.

Missing in Action Staff Sergeant Oberhansley from Uintah County

Mr and Mrs Fred Oberhansley of Hayden were informed by the War Department that their son Staff Sergeant Oberhansley a turret gunner on a fortress was missing in action somewhere over England. The 25 year old gunner enlisted in the Army Air Corps in May 1940 and trained at Salt Lake City and Lowrey Field Denver before embarking for foreign service in September 1944. He attended school locally here for one year and was a brother of Mr. Lyle Anderson.

Hammer Slaying Case to Appear In District Court

The Fourth Judicial District Court will hear one civil case three criminal cases and four probate matters with Judge Abe W on the bench.
