Vernal Mayor to Attend Hearing on Indian Lands
Uintah and Duchesne county stockmen Mayor Bob Stringham will attend a congressional hearing in Washington DC on the Robinson bill Tuesday. He leaves Salt Lake City by plane Monday and plans to return when the hearing ends. The session, part of a committee series, concerns proposed Indian land withdrawals and stockmen interests in the Uintah Basin.

Legion Names Officers for Fifth District
The American Legion district conventions closed with a banquet at the Country club between Price and Helper. Wilford Jensen presided as Wasmaster. Harry, pastor of the Price post, was chosen district commander and William B. Wallis of the Vernal post as vice commander. The two were named as delegate and alternate to the national convention. Auxiliary officers include Mrs Etta Ralphs Ferron president, Mrs Lyle Lamph Price first vice president, Mrs Mary Poqu Monb second vice president, Mrs Ray Curtis Orangeville secretary and treasurer, and Mrs Uri Kirk Hiawatha historian. Plans for the state convention at Vernal August 6 and 7 were discussed. Attending from Witbeck Post No 11 were Charles D. Anderson, newly elected commander, Willem B. Wallis, Glen John Milburn, Henry Workmen, and John Stesy. Officers of the Witbeck Post were installed.

Dr LeRoy Kay and Dr J K Doutt from the Carnegie Institute arrive for a summer of research in Utah Wyoming and Montana. They will meet with the National Park Service to improve Dinosaur National Monument and collect hydrocarbon samples for Mellon Institute and study tertiary sediments in Inter Montana. Doutt’s family joins to assist and gather present day mammals near Vernal while Kay directs vertebrate paleontology research.

Robert Johnston son of Mr and Mrs T T Johnston was promoted from first lieutenant to captain at Camp Rucker Alabama where he is stationed with the engineers. Johnston, a former University of Ul an student, left here with the National Guard in 1941. Three Vernal educators received bachelor of science degrees this week. Pearl Shaffer and Iris White graduated from Utah State Agricultural College, qualifying to teach in Utah secondary or elementary schools. Beatrice Stringham, longtime Central School instructor and current primary supervisor, earned the same degree at Brigham Young University Provo. White and Shaffer had been active in the American Legion Auxiliary as instructors at Central School, while Stringham has guided the primary program for eight years.

Mr and Mrs F S Middleton, longtime Ashley Valley residents, marked their 59th wedding anniversary at their daughter Mrs Charlotte May Gorness’s home. He was born in Brighton Washington County and she in Maryshill Scotland, marrying June 4 1885 in Geneva Neb. The couple later moved to Meeker Cole and finally to Ashley Valley, raising four children.

Pheasant Longer Season Hunt Proposed For Uintah Basin
A sixteen day pheasant season was urged by Uintah Basin sportsmen at a Roosevelt meeting called by Mayor George H Harrison. The plan would run Oct 30 to Nov 4 with a bag limit of four birds daily and twelve for the season. They also urged a separate elk season and opposed female deer season in the Uintah Basin. The group pressed hatchery and fish-planting improvements at Whiterocks, including new native-material buildings and rearing ponds.

Lions Convention In Vernal Attracts Over One Hundred Visitors
The housing committee has been busy placing Lions in private homes after all local auto courts and hotels filled up ahead of the Utah Lions convention opening Friday in Vernal for three days. Registration begins Friday at noon with sightseeing trips and a Dry Fork creek bridge project on offer. The Warriors Shrine session opens Friday at 6 pm with songs, national anthem, flag salute, and talks by district officials. A barbecue and dance follow at Doc's Beach. Saturday starts with breakfast at Centre Hall at 7:20 am, with Mayor Stringham as toastmaster. The program includes invocations, speeches by Lion leaders, and various introductions. Clyde 8 Bua Johnson a prominent Vernal lawyer has received a lieutenant junior grade appointment in the US Naval Reserve. He studied at the University of Utah and Denver Law School, earning an LLB in 1935, and opened his Vernal practice in 1937. A past county attorney, he is active in civic affairs, married to Isabel Johnson with two daughters, Jenny Lou and Joane. He plans to close his law office on June 17 for Navy orders.

Pioneer rancher and miner Thomas H. Blevins died Sunday at Tam at the home of Mrs Joste Morris where he had resided for months. The body was buried Monday in Jensen cemetery with Bishop Lloyd J. Merkley dedicating the grave. Blevins, born in Indiana, was 8. (Continued on Page five)

Preston Q Hale and Dr J KE Doutt captured moving pictures of a rare white deer in Ashley National Forest near Kabell Springs two miles from Cemal Vernal. The two year old buck stood briefly with brown eyes and a cream tan stripe along its back before vanishing into the timber. Local observer Joe Luz noted an orphan fawn nearby, while Dr LeRoy Hay calls a white deer on the North American continent very unusual. Continue on Page cigity.

Thirty three persons attended the fire training camp at Green Lakes last Thursday through Saturday. Agencies represented included Forest Service, National Parks Service, Soil Conservation Service, Extension Service, and state wildlife, agriculture college, and Civilian Defense offices. Training covered first aid by Red Cross and fire fighting techniques with demonstrations.
