Lt David B Hall piloted a bomber over Vernal near Ashley Valley delivering a special message to nephews Dwain Dee and Ivan Hall. He circled over the crowd, waved to children, dropped a letter, then continued to Salt Lake and on to Albuquerque where he trains as a bombardier instructor.

Navy and community notes from Ames Town to England

WPA Scrap Metal Moved From Vernal to Rail on Gall Lake

In Uintah County, about 150 tons of WPA scrap metal were moved last week by seven Fort Douglas army trucks from Vernal and Heber City to be transported by rail to Gall Lake. Eight soldiers from the Sunny South stayed four weeks, loading seven truckloads daily to Heber, under Lee Dustin's direction aided by a wrecker. Mrs Burnest Eaton vacationing in Provo. Legion Plans State Convention in August

The American Legion unit schedules its twenty second annual state convention for August. Delegates from over seventy posts are expected to attend the two day event with official sessions and evening entertainment including a Legion Fruit at Docs Beach and a patriotic program at Alatah High School. An unusual display of local natural resources will feature Dinosaur National Monument Ashley National Forest Indian pictographs and relics with color and monochrome enlargements. Co chairmen include John Stage and Mrs Eva Ashton, past department president of Aux, a candidate for national vice president.

Death claims Apostle Ot LDS Church at 86

Apostle Ot Clawson, longtime leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and member of the council of twelve since 191%, died Monday at his home in Salt Lake City at age 86. Born in Salt Lake City on March 12, 1857, he served as president of Box Elder stake and directed the Brigham City tabernacle project. He gained early note as a missionary in the southern states, where he and companion Joseph Blanding faced hostility. Clawson stood by Blanding when he was killed, an act that impressed many in the church and community. He had been at the church office building daily prior to illness.

Murder Suspects Face Preliminary Hearing In District Court

Edward Ritchey and Reed Ritchey charged with hammering of a woman last October in Uintah. They appeared for a preliminary hearing and will be arraigned July 17 with trial slated for August. Trial attorney Knox Itterton represents Ritchey. The State also pursued Ralph Wall for brand theft, resulting in a guilty verdict and one year probation with $1000 tax defrayment. Several estates and divorces were processed, and Reed and Ritchey were moved to Salt Lake County jail to await trial. Convictions were dismissed by a federal judge on jurisdiction grounds.

Uintah County Men Report for Final Induction

Seventeen or more Uintah county men reported at Fort Douglas for final induction. Selections included six navy acceptances and eleven army enlistees with listed names such as Alvin Richardson and Elwood Hatch. Several others were transferred to different local boards for induction.

Settlement on Hill Creek Area in Uintah Duchesne lands

Mayor Stringham returned from Washington after representing Uintah and Duchesne stockmen at the final Public Lands hearing. The temporary 10 year grazing permit plan favors white stockmen with five year permits, and Indian grazing with no increase in livestock. The agreement, issued by the Interior, is contingent on the Robinson Bull bill and places operators under Taylor Grazing rules. Cedar lands totaling 61000 acres north Strawberry and Duchesne rivers revert to public domain. ceded Indian lands remain restricted with future supervision by Indian Department. Stringham says the settlements are compromises, not fully acceptable to any party.

Juvenile Denver Car Thieves Are Arrested

Two Denver juveniles Robert Elina Cooper aged 16 and Howard Douglas Thompson aged 10 were arrested by Sheriff I M Snyder after noon on Wednesday for stealing two cars. The first theft occurred Tuesday evening in a lot on idth and California Streets. The boys abandoned a grey Ford sedan at Gamby and secured ida to Steamboat, where a second grey Ford sedan belonging to Cecil Borax was stolen. The Steamboat thief notified Sheriff Snyder, who pursued to Wiley’s Resort and captured them near Vernal. They were taken to Vernal jail and await trial.
