Pioneer Mother of 1847 Passes Away

Mary B Calder longtime Ashley Valley pioneer and last survivor of Utah’s 1847 settlers died peacefully May 29 in Vernal at her son’s home. Born May 4 1844 in Nauvoo to John Bennion and Estler Wainwright Bennion she arrived with the Taylor company in 1847. She helped found Taylorsville and later moved to Vernal in 1905 with her husband George Calder who ran Calder Park. She left fourteen children 33 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Vernal with interment in the Vernal Cemetery.

Priesthood Officers Monthly Meeting at Uintah Stake Tabernacle

The priesthood officers met at the Uintah Stake Tabernacle with strong attendance. Mothers Relief Society furnished music and memorials. promotion rites from the Primary Association to the Aaronic Priesthood were presented by Bishop J Clive Davis Aubra Heage and others.

Vernal Opens New Service Station in Uintah Basin

A V Lewis of Lewis Motor Company and Utah Oil and Refining agent opens a new service station on Uintah Avenue opposite the post office. Thomas Karren will manage. The station features enclosed washing and greasing, hydraulic lift, space for 18 cars, and will offer Pep 88 gas refined by Utah Oil and Refining. Lewis remains in charge across from courthouse corner.

Musical Opera for First Ward Chapel at U H 8 Auditorium

Vernal audience thrives on In Old Louisiana a Uintah High School auditorium musical opera. Cast and chorus deliver strong performances with a eleven piece orchestra. Notable actors include Igon as Old Ned Walker as Ree Caldwell as Richard St John, O'Donnell Goodrich as Monty Gray and Markey as Marquis de la Tour. Proceeds benefit Vernal First Ward chapel and the show repeats Saturday.

Uintah Count Men Taken to Forest Camp

A Uintah County contingent of 25 men left for the Ashley Forest conservation camp near Bullionville to help construct and staff the summer camp in the Dser mine district. The camp site at Bullionville is being established with camp equipment and medical checks underway. full quotas are expected as construction completes.

Orin P Samuels Dies After Stomach Operation in Hayden

Orin P Samuels, born August 13 1893 in Vernal, died Monday in Hayden after an operation for stomach ailment Sunday evening. He moved from Vernal about a month ago to work on the Wilton Carey ranch. Survived by his parents, two brothers Guy Kenneth and Lorenzo, five sisters, and relatives in Salt Lake City and San Francisco. Funeral in Vernal Second Ward chapel with church dignitaries officiating. burial at Pieper Cemetery.

Sheriff Arrests Gar Thief Fit Jensen In Colorado Plot

On Monday afternoon Colorado officers advised that a stolen Pontiac 6 with three men fled toward Jensen. Sheriff J Emery Jensen Deputy Andrew Eling and City Marshall Lare Richardson stopped the car at the post office and ordered surrender. A bandit at Oak Creek fired at the fleeing car, the car bore a Wisconsin license, and all three were returned to Colorado that evening.
