Senate Okehs Amendment to Extend Wool Act
The Senate approved an amendment to extend four years the National Wool Act as part of the farm bill. The roll call was 67 to 9. The act requires growers to sell wool on the open market while receiving direct federal payments to cover the gap between market prices and the support level. Payments could reach up to 110 percent of parity under current law, funded by earmarked tariff receipts. Senator Mumphrey accused the administration of using Kremlin style tactics to argue lower prices reduce production. Midwest Democrats sought broader reform to price supports, with fears a veto and loss of planting controls for corn, cotton, and rice. Senator Kefauver warned that without farm legislation Bolton allotments could be slashed.
