Vernal Pool Plans Advance For Next Year

Uintah County residents, led by Alvin Kay and Lawrence Sid dieway of the Vernal Jr Chamber pool committee, return from meetings with state health officials and the engineer. They report cooperation from health officers, plan changes to meet standards, and a $65,000 pool to be built in the city park with excavation this summer and a bath house and filtration plant to follow for use when school ends.

Two Men and Woman Endure Green River Trip to Lees Ferry

A trio Richard Griffith James Gifford and Isabelle Gale paused in Vernal to rest and resupply after capsizing near Disaster Falls. Gifford escaped unharmed while their second rubber boat saved rifles and cameras. They aim to reach Lees Ferry by Sept 1 after a 900 mile journey with no portages. Weeks then left Vernal to nurse in Salt Lake City before joining Girl Scout Camp duties. The note adds that United States Argentina and Australia are the world's largest wool producers.

Vernal Native Drowns in Colorado River Ford

George K. Speirs a 22 year old Vernal native and Ray Miller 35 of Grand Junction Colo drowned July 23 while fording the Colorado river near De Beque Colo Rescue parties continue to search for the two bodies Speirs son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Speirs of Salt Lake City was born in Vernal Sept 18 1927 He had lived in Salt Lake City and was working on a cattle ranch near Meeker Colo during his death The Uintah Stake Homecoming featured large family reunions at Merkley park and Davis ward with officers elected and out of town guests attending The Lewis Sr reunion at Merkley park included breakfast canyon sports and a family program with DeVere Carroll as president and officers chosen for the 1950 term

Ward Reunions Highlight Local Stake Get-Togethers

Ward members from Naples Whiterocks and Davis held a multi-ward reunion Friday July 22 with programs, games, and community activities. Naples featured Memories theme and a one act play. Whiterocks hosted park events and supper. Davis staged army drill, songs, and picnic lunch with afternoon games and a boxing scoreboard.

Services Held For Victim Of Accident In Utah County

Edward Bry tate Ceccinups dies in a Friday construction site accident west of Duchesne Utah. He worked for Mendenhall Construction Co. in Springville and was crushed when a tractor brakes failed while attaching a chain to a truck. Burial followed at Lapoint Cemetery with Frank Olpin directing. Born April 7 1902 in Swan Lake Idaho he moved to Uintah county as a child and later to Lapoint where he married in 1933. The story notes his widow Vera Horrocks Bryant and his career shift from farming to construction. The silk worm paragraph appears as unrelated added material.

Alterra Graduate Wins Sears Roebuck Scholarship

Irvin Young of Randicll, Alterra graduate and former FFA reporter, received a 100 dollar Sears Roebuck Foundation scholarship to Utah State Agricultural College. The award is part of 24 Utah allocations funded nationwide since 1947, with installment payments across fall winter and spring quarters.

Farm Safety Week Observed Across Uintah Basin

National Farm Safety Week runs July 24 to 30 by proclamation of President Truman. Hugh W. Calton chairs the Uintah Basin observance with help from the Uintah Basin Soil Conservation district supervisors and local Soil Conservation Service reps. He notes farm accidents affected one in six farms in 1948 and cost average three weeks lost per incident. he urges families to inspect premises and equipment to reduce risks.

Scout Camp Program Is Completed At Iron Springs

About 100 men and boys prepare for the Utah National Parks council Boy Scout encampment from August 1 to 5 at Iron Springs. Camp director Orlo Goodrich and Uintah district commissioner report on site near the Vernal Manila highway in Ashley National Forest. James G. Anderson of Price oversees the five day program including hikes campfire programs and instruction amid 30 to 40 troops arriving around noon on opening day.

Oil progress and new wells near Ashley and Naples

Oil men report activity across Utah with Kendall No. 1 at 1320 feet near Naples and Crain Griffith Dan Hillman No. 1 wildcat planned northwest of Ashley valley field. McKay Bennion Dedicate Hospital and Chapels at Uintah

The Uintah County hospital worth 380000 dollars and three LDS chapels were dedicated over the weekend. Heber Bennion Jr spoke for state support while David O. McKay led church dedications. Local officials and citizens praised the hospital drive and Homecoming efforts.

Vernal Airport to Receive Federal Aid for Improvements

Federal aid announces a slate of 314 airport projects for 1950, including $35,000 federal and $21,000 local for Vernal municipal building and field lighting. Union High bid process restarted by Uintah County Board

At a Roosevelt meeting Tuesday night the Uintah and Duchesne county school boards voted to advertise for new bids for the construction of the Union High School. Russell Todd chaired the session. Superintendent Harold Lundell cited elapsed time and lower material prices as reasons for reopening bids.

Research Fellowship Awarded to Uintah Native

B Austin Haws a Ver nal native and Utah State College graduate has won a 1140 research fellowship to pursue a PhD at Iowa State College Ames Iowa starting Aug 1. Haws has worked with the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station on lygus bugs and alfalfa seed production and held a leadership role at Uintah High School. He and his wife Gwen Hunsaker will move from Logan. funds come from the Iowa keepers association.
