Calder Receives Commission in Navy Reserve
Grant H Calder son of President and Hyrum B Calder earned a commission as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Naval Reserve. He was to report for active duty at Northwestern University on July 27 and was to be taken to Denver to then travel to Chicago for training. Logan July 26 The Utah State Press Association representing more than 60 publishers urged voters to defeat Senate Bill 44 in a referendum next fall. They warned the tax on chain stores would threaten free enterprise and press freedom. Elisha Hanson of the American Newspapers Publishers Association addressed the convention from Washington.

National Lamb Week Opens September Fifth
National Lamb Week will run September 5 to 12 with emphasis on lamb in the war diet. Utah nutritionists and meat shops will display ways lamb fits into the Food For Freedom program for housewives. Utah is expected to produce 13 million pounds of lamb, enough for seven million people, with the army consuming millions for servicemen. John Stegg of the American Legion Witbeck Post No. 11 led Friday’s dedication of a new flag pole at the Uintah county courthouse grounds. Rookie pilot rescues trainee in midair squall at Morris Field
Lieutenant Claud Wooley, 26, of Vernal Utah, led 21-year-old William Honaker to safety during a downpour and 190-foot ceiling at Morris Field. Flying a P-39, Wooley swooped in to guide Honaker away from danger as storms raked the airstrip. He earned commendations from Lt. Col. Anderson and Major Tacon for his brave, swift action.

Neighbor Rescues Infant From Burning Farm Home
A seven month old girl was saved by neighbor Dor Burris when the William Parrot home burned 112 miles northwest of town. Burris entered smoke filled rooms to find the infant on a bed and removed her before the fire trap and flames destroyed the structure and contents including the dresser’s $50 in currency. The mother was away milking cows when the lamp in an oil stove apparently exploded. The two older children were at a neighbor’s.

Former Uintah County official seeks renomination for two year post
Ray G. Labrum, long time Uintah County resident, farmer and businessman, seeks the Democratic nomination for a two year county commissioner term in the upcoming Primary. He has chaired Dry Gulch Irrigation Co and Moon Lake Water Users Association, served on the school board, and worked in state road maintenance. Labrum held two terms as county commissioner from 1936 to 1940 and spent months on LDS church duties in the Northwest during 1941 42.

Vernal Youth Enlists in Mormon Battalion
Wayne Lyon of Uintah High, class of 1939, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Lyon, has enlisted in the first platoon of the Mormon Battalion Marine Corps. He is the first Uintah County recruit to join the Battalion and lived in Vernal. Farewell services were held on the Capitol steps with Governor Maw and Elier David McKay speaking. About 100 relatives and friends attended. Wayne will be stationed in San Diego for several months.
