Body Found in Green River At Red Canyon

Rob ert Wildermuth 19 of Rock Springs drowned while a winning year Green River Wyoming. After a three week search his body was found on a sand bar in Red Canyon near Green Lakes by Oscar Swett a Greendale rancher. Coroner J Warden Opie and Sheriff Mike Maher took the body to Rock Springs. Wildermuth was a standout high school athlete and his disappearance drew hundreds to the river search efforts.

Uintah County Valuation Tops Five Million

Uintah County's valuation reached 5 196 630 in 1943, the first time over five million in eleven years, per county clerk F L Noel. Wax county recorded 5 918 357, red county below five million until last year when it stood at 4 802 078.

Utah Exceeds Jane Quota In Fat Drive

Utah exceeded quotas in a fat collection drive as housewives delivered 85013 pounds, about 5000 pounds above target. The effort involved 6000 Scouts and volunteers aiding the drive. Salt Lake City figures include Art Walton, Clyde Daniels, Orson Gichester, Roy Cahoon, and C D Anderson of Vernal.

Stop Buying Australian Wool Urged in Stockpile Debate

Senator O Mahoney of Wyoming urged the U S to cease purchases of Australian wool for stockpiling, noting domestic imports total about 459 million pounds yearly and the pile roughly doubles that. He said the Defense Supplies Corporation has not bought foreign wool for government use in about a year, while Britain still buys, and cited progress in the South Pacific reducing invasion fears of Australia. He reported war agency heads are sympathetic but no formal commitment was made by the War Production Board or other agencies.

Fire in Book Cliffs Believed to Involve Plane

Report from Willow Creek’s H M Snyder describes a large fire along the Book Cliffs northeast of Grand County near the south slope. Heavy black smoke rose as state and Army Air Base observers traced search planes over the area for days. The event possibly linked to a missing twin engine aircraft from Mather Field Sacramento with six aboard last heard from Milford Utah.

City and County Build Bridges For Canyon Road

City and Uintah County funds finance three permanent bridges on Canyon Road two over Dry Fork and one over Ashley Creek. Lafe Richardson oversees seven men as log crib structures with cobble rock abatements near completion. Two Dry Fork bridges expected by Saturday and all three with stringers within thirty days if materials stay available. Fire Fighters Eligible For Compensation

Forest Fire Fighter Service volunteers assisting in forest and range fire suppression will be eligible for civilian defense compensation. About 4000 volunteers join the program as they enroll and certify as fire guards and auxiliary firemen in the US Citizens Defense Corps, with coverage regardless of where the injury occurs, as long as it happened in the line of official duty.

Local Liquor Agency To Change Hands In Vernal

Johnston, proprietor of Uintah Drug Co., announced Thursday his intention to terminate the contract as liquor agent for Vernal with Utah Liquor Control Commission. Arrangements to close the agency’s business will be made Monday, and a new agent will be elected to continue liquor dispensing in Vernal. Johnston plans to devote more time to pharmacy after the agency stocks are released. The new agency’s location and placement were not yet finalized.

Indian Draft Evader Driver Narrowly Escapes Truck Overturn

Stewart Tanner escaped with his life when his coal truck veered off a highway near town and overturned trapping him in the cab. Investigators say he may have fallen asleep at the wheel while en route from the White River mine to Vernal. The 1:13 pm crash left his vehicle damaged and his clothing soaked with fuel. a warrant-related arrest and subsequent custody followed.

Glines Youth Drowned at Long Park Lake

Funeral services were held for 17 year old Clell Burns at the Glines ward chapel. The Vernal Utah area incident occurred at Long Park reservoir near the Units mountains. Burns was last seen by fishermen about 5:30 PM and later found submerged in about four feet of water with a white fishing sack in his hands. Sheriff's investigators said he likely slipped and suffered water cramps.

Ute Sun Dance Ends After Four Days Near Whiterocks

The annual four day sun dance of the Ute Indians from the Ouray Reservation near Whiterocks concluded Monday night. Dressed in traditional regalia, tribesmen danced from dawn to late night each day as hundreds of tourists and residents watched. 450 Pound Bear Killed At Kaler Hollow

A bear weighing about 440 pounds was killed near Kaler Hollow west of Oaks Park on Wednesday by Andrew Atwood and Tom Lux. The creature was displayed in Vernal Wednesday afternoon. The report notes such a bear could consume significant livestock value annually. Lunch Project Canned in Schools Under Board Sponsorship

The county community lunch program switches from federal WPA support to school board supervision this year. The board hires labor to can surplus vegetables in school kitchens, starting with peas this week. Last year 25,000 quarts were produced, enabling hot lunches at two high schools and nine other sites. Scouts Begin Three Day Camping Trip at Oaks Park

Scouts from across the country begin a three day camping trip at Oaks Park led by Scoutmasters and district officials. Posthumous Purple Heart For Roosevelt Youth Sgt Hancock

Mr and Mrs Alva D Hancock of Bluebell report their son Sgt Morris W Hancock was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He was killed when the plane he served as radio operator in was struck by anti aircraft fire near Kiska Island in the Aleutians on Oct 16 1942. The award followed his earlier decoration for distinct radio operator duties aboard a patrol craft during combat.
