Legion National Head to Speak at Utah Convention in Vernal

Jefferson D Atwood national vice commander of the American Legion will address the Utah Department convention in Vernal on August 6 and 7. Roswell attorney Atwood, a former army officer with service on the Mexican border and in World War I, will headline the opening patriotic program and pageant. The Uintah Basin reports several local men in military service including Gus Vernal, Harold Winward, Dale Stewart, and Vernon Richards who left Salt Lake for Marine training in San Diego. Drowned Youth in Lake Boreham Near Duchesne

Delos Mathews Boreham Lake youth from Bluebell drowned Sunday afternoon after diving from a rowboat to retrieve an oar. Strong winds left lake choppy. Max Burdick and companions attempted rescue but failed. Mathews, son of Claude and Alice Winkle Mathews, disappeared beneath the waves.

Forest Employee Named Lions District Secretary

District Governor BH Etringham announces Robert F Livsey as district Lions secretary and Ashley National Forest office administrative assistant. Uintah Basin Parish Gets New Priests

Benedictine missionaries Rev Wendella Luetmer and Rev Blase Schumacher are assigned to take charge of the Parish of St Helen at Roosevelt and missions across the Uintah Basin. Opened Vernal Area to Deer Hunting Under Postwar Plan

Postwar plan opens Ashley Aime preserve near Vernal for snick deer during regular season. State Fish and Game Department, spurred by Forest Service and local groups, restores hunting in a large portion of Diamond Mountain region, with about 25000 acres in restricted status. Small Fires Reported on Ashley Forest

Three small fires burned in Ashley National Forest over the past week. Two were lightning caused and one started by a careless camper. Sheep herders and rangers helped locate and extinguish fires. officials urge all visitors to exercise caution. Firefighters are scarce, so simple precautions are essential to prevent diverting labor from defense and agriculture. Report fires promptly to the nearest forest ranger or supervisor.

Twenty-One Uintah County Men Report for U S Service

Twenty one Uintah county men were called for U S service after passing examinations in Salt Lake City last week. Those entering the army report to Fort Douglas July 22. Two men reported to the navy today. Names include Melvin Boyd, Grey Burrell, Walter LeRoy Schofield, Lewis Kemp Budd, Scott, Victor Davia, Baron Leon Lowell Brady, Clair Jollay, Gien Hacking Calder, Lynn Lebrun, Carl Ross Dee Wallace Brough, Ruel Bodily, Richard Ekstand, Den Muir Welker. Arthur E Cummings and others transferred to different local boards. Mrs Stella Harris Oaks and two children returned Friday from a three week vacation.

Thorne Addresses Lions Club on Indian Relics at Merkley Park

L C Thorne spoke to the Lions Club Wednesday evening at Merkley Park about Indian photographs and relics to be found nearby. Twenty members, a luncheon, and a lecture followed as plans for a rustic lodge in the recreation area were discussed.

Services Held at Lapoint for Rose Daniel

Funeral services were held at Lapoint Chapel for Rose Daniel born on the Navajo Reservation and later living on the Uintah and Duchesne areas. Interment was on the old Daniel homestead by the Duchesne River. Surviving children include Walter Daniel of Orem and Albert Daniel of Ft. Duchesne with several daughters and many grandchildren. A long obituary notes family ties to local church leadership and the Daniels Canyon naming.
