Uintah County School Levy Bid Denied by Commissioners
Uintah county school board sought a four mill levy to raise 29000 for Union high school construction but was rejected by the board of county commissioners. The tentative 1948 levy was set at 11.6 mills excluding school taxes, with last year’s totals at 11.9 and 8.7 for schools.

More than 10 000 attended the Vernal rodeo over three nights. O L Johnson secret ary treasurer says after expenses there will be enough to pay the 1550 lighting system, now property of the rodeo association. December officer elections may decide continued use. Prizes were awarded for floats and dress contests. Kids contest winners include Mary Ann King and Carma Rae Mackay. Final dance yielded a saddle and a shetland pony to winners.

July 24 Pioneer Day celebration plans announced
Vernal officials announced Saturday events for the July 24 Pioneer Day celebration in Vernal city park near the courthouse. A program at 11 a.m. features Sunday school groups, a noon ice cream concession, a possible Uintah High School band, children’s games, a 1 to 2:30 p.m. sports period, a 3:30 p.m. children’s dance, and a 9 p.m. Pioneer Day dance at Imperial Hall with free roller skating starting at 7:30 p.m.

Joint Services For Biddies Set For Thursday
Two long bonded soldiers Staff Sgt. Cecil Gale Alexander and Staff Sgt. Leland Hatch will be honored with joint funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. Alexander a Uintah High School alumnus born 1918 earned a Silver Star in Italy and served in North Africa Sicily and Italy campaigns. Hatch born 1918 enlisted in 1942 fought in North Africa Sicily and Italy and was wounded in 1943. Survivors include their parents and several siblings. Officers from American Legion Witbeck Post No 11 will direct the services with Ernest Johnson conducting and Lamond Tullis and Walter Woolley speaking. A chorus will perform two musical selections and solos will close the program. Burial for Alexander will be at Maeser Fairview cemetery and Hatch at Vernal Memorial Park.

Concessions by All States Bring Accord on Colorado River
State water commissioners reached a 14 day accord over the Colorado River division among Utah Colorado Wyoming New Mexico and Arizona. The agreement allocates 118 percent of the 7 8 million acre feet sought with Colorado at 51 75 percent Utah 23 New Mexico 11 25 and Wyoming 14 percent Arizona a flat 50 000 acre feet. The settlement lets legislatures vote on the terms and paves the way for Congress to enact the compact law while preventing delays in reclamation projects and river flows to the Pacific.

Bear Attack at Yellowstone Camp Leaves Girl Injured

About 80 members of the Utah State Press Association plus their wives will meet at Green Lakes for a three day summer outing from August 6 to 8.
