Vernal Building Projects Advance Over $1 Million Value

Progress continues on Vernal area construction valued at more than $1,000,000. Major efforts include Uintah county hospital, Third Ward chapel and Uintah stake center, Gimes LDS ward chapel, Vernal airport, state field house of Natural History, Catholic Church, and Naples LDS Ward chapel. Plewe Construction crews lead hospital work with a $350,000 site. a county crew handles excavation as equipment delays ease. The building should be ready for occupancy by next June and mirrors the First LDS Ward chapel in design by Lorenzo Young.

War Hero Funeral Set for Pfc Earl Morrison

Funeral services for Pfc. Earl Morrison who died August 5 1944 at age 21 in the New Britain Islands will be held at 2 pm Thursday in the Ashley ward chapel under the direction of the Ashley ward bishopric. He is survived by parents Mr and Mrs William Morrison of Vernal a sister Mrs Vada Hager Sacramento California and two brothers Doyle Morrison of Sacramento and Charlie Morrison of Vernal.

Mail Delivery House-to-House Move Advances in Vernal

Vernal progress on mail delivery continues as sidewalk work begins. Postmaster Pontha Calder calls for city sidewalk and street numbering standards, urges property owners to paint numbers and fit proper mailboxes, and promises an inspector study to meet department requirements.

Funeral Services Conducted for John Nielsen

Funeral services for John Nielsen 90 died at his daughter’s home in Vernal were held Tuesday at 2 pm in the LDS Second ward chapel. The service included prayers, several musical numbers by a mixed quartet and male quartet, and burial in Vernal Memorial Park. Nielsen born June 9 1858 in Bukkehane Maribo Amt Denmark lived in Utah and Uintah Basin as a farmer. Surviving are seven children 38 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.

Huber Infant Glenda dies nine hours after birth

Funeral services for Glenda Huber infant daughter of Frank Darrell and Mary Lou Burgess Huber were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Lapoint ward with Bishop Leo Walker conducting. Burial was in La Point cemetery. Survivors include her parents a brother Lloyd and grandparents Mr and Mrs Hyrum Burgess and Mr and Mrs Frank Huber.

Mine Rumors At Uintah Minerals Are Spiked

Rumors of a concentration mill at Uintah Minerals Corp. on Brush Creek Mountain were denied by A Voorhies a corporation official. He said test holes are being sunk to locate ore on leased and filed property and that work will await ore discovery. About 300 men were reportedly to start work north of Vernal near Manila Highway.

Services Held For Rose Dudley Infant Daughter

A brief funeral service conducted by Rev. Blase Schumacher was held Monday afternoon at Swann Funeral Home in Vernal for Rose Dudley infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Dudley of Jensen. Burial followed in Jensen Cemetery. Born July 8 in Uintah Basin, she died July 11. Survivors include her parents two brothers Ryan and Frank Dudley a sister Marie Dudley paternal grandmother Mrs. Lina Dudley and maternal grandfather Frank Davenport.

High School Music Teacher Resigns in Uintah District

Gilbert E. Childs, music instructor at Uintah high school, resigned this week with the Uintah Board of Education approving. Superintendent H. M. Lundell said he will likely continue summer instruction and may take a tentative teaching post at Lincoln High School in Orem.

Carter Oil tests near Vernal stir regional oil fever

Camera crews to film Vernal sights for Colorado River project

A Fox Moyle News crew will arrive in Vernal to photograph scenes along the Colorado River. The trip follows Vernal area promoter C B Henderson and the U S Highway 40 Association director’s report. The footage ties to the Upper Colorado Compact meeting taking place locally.

Vernal to Host Utah State Baseball Meet at Jaycee Park

Vernal has been chosen to hold the Utah State Baseball Tournament at Jaycee Park in late July to crown the state champion. The winner advances to the National tournament in Wichita Kansas with a possible 10000 prize and a state championship trophy and all state team. Manager Cliff Caldwell notes Vernal’s suitability for the annual event despite past hosts in larger cities. Fires on Ashley National Forest Extinguished

Two fires started by fishermen burned about 10 acres in Ashley Gorge and near Paradise Park. Forest supervisor Ona Harrlson and Ranger Glen Lambert led suppression with Basin Flying Service crew and Banker Walkup crew overnight. A closing order may extend to ban all smoking in the forest to prevent further fires and authorities seek cooperation to identify responsible parties.

Funeral Conducted Sunday for Thomas A Wardell

Funeral services for Thomas Alvin Wardell, 43, Vernal rancher and sheep man, who died July 7 of a heart ailment, were held Sunday July 11 at the Vernal Second Ward chapel. Speakers included Archie Johnson and local leaders. a quartet sang. Survivors include widow Vena Rasmussen Wardell and seven children. Wardell, born June 22, 1908 in Peoa Summit County, was a longtime Vernal resident.
