Carter Oil shows gas at Ruth Nelson No 1 in Vernal Utah

Carter Oil Co officials reported Ruth Nelson No 1 wildcat five miles southwest of Vernal may yield a small producing well. Two drill stem tests produced gas flows of up to 5.62 million cubic feet per day with oil spray, gravity 28.2, and a 14 foot sand pocketleft. Test results uncertain due to limited sand, casing arrival in days, and irregular formation. Enthusiasm remains high for Uintah basin impact and Vernal prospects despite cautious outlook.

Vital Water Meet Opens in Vernal

Officials and engineers from Utah Colorado New Mexico Wyoming and Arizona opened the seventh conference of the Upper Colorado River Basin Compact Commission in Vernal to advance a lasting water compact after more than two years of study and decades of uncertainty. Prominent attendees included Gov Herbert Maw Utah Attorney General Grover Giles and state officials along with federal bureau representatives and local board members. The meeting at the state field house of natural history features reports on Indiana interests economic findings and planned banquet speeches broadcast on KJAM and KNAK stations.

Sportsmen's Riot At Green Lakes Draws Big Crowd

Attended by at least 500 persons, the Sportsmen's Riot held Monday July 5 at Green Lakes resort was called a big success by Sweeney Ross general chairman. He said crowd enjoyment was high and some events were so crowded scores remain to be tabulated and will be announced later.

Cleaner Gayla Set For July 13 At Vernal Chapel

Plans are underway for the Gleaner Gayla to be held Tuesday evening July 13 at 7 45 at the Vernal First Ward Chapel. An entertainment program will include a handwork display and a fashion show with the ward YW M L A leaders gleaner girls executive officers and Stake YW M L A officers invited. Mothers of the girls are guest, and girls who have been away at school or work are urged to attend. Handwork should be turned in by July 11 and those modeling apparel should contact Amber Adams or committee members Donna Goodrich Eloise Neilson and Reva Merrell.

Claude Banks named vice president of Vernal Kiwanis to fill vacancy after Harry Wilson becomes president at Hotel Vernal meeting. Banks a Uintah Basin native WWII veteran and new member, joins reorganization prompted by Ralph Millburn’s resignation. Special speaker Mayor B H Stringham discussed the Philadelphia Republican National Convention as Uintah County’s first delegate to attend a national convention. Marty Wilson, newly appointed president, presided.

Cat the Men Make Tour of Western Colorado

At least six Uintah county representatives attend the annual Colorado Hereford Breeders tour, joining about 600 breeders from the west. William C. Whitaker says four men plus another rider left Vernal by auto for Denver, with events through Denver to Steamboat Springs. The tour, hosted by western Colorado Hereford breeders, travels through major stops as invites go to western Hereford breeders.

Dairy Farmers Tour Utah and Idaho Planned Trip

About 50 Uintah and Duchesne county dairymen will tour central Utah and southern Idaho July 19 to 21. They will visit Utah State Agricultural College in Logan and the world’s largest Swiss cheese factory in Smithfield. The tour is organized by extension services with Uintah and Duchesne counties and the Dairy Herd Improvement Assn. Orson Nielson is president. Louis Jensen reports.

Ona Bartlett Receives University of Utah Normal Scholarship

Ona Bartlett of Tremont declined an extra BYU award and earned a University of Utah Normal scholarship granting $100 annually while she maintains satisfactory work until graduation. A 1948 Alta High School graduate, Bartlett held multiple roles including Spartanette vice president, editor of the Spartan, and student council member, with honors in declamation and journalism.

Exceedingly Good Was Fishing Over July 1

Fred Reynolds, fish and game warden, called opening of the high Uintas exceedingly good. Weather aided, 100 plus cars at Oaks Park lake and 50 at Northfork of the Ashley. About 80 percent of anglers took limits, with Oaks Park beds producing well in early hours.

Vernal Rodeo Set For July 15 to 17 In Vernal

The annual Vernal rodeo will entertain about 10,000 spectators over three nights at Uintah County Fairgrounds. Marion McBride supplies stock from Wellsville with events including calf roping bulldogging bareback riding Brahma bull riding and bronc busting under Rodeo Association of America rules. Prizes total 450 per event plus entry fees, with a 6 pm parade each night and rodeo performances at 7 pm.

Union School Project Seeks 84000 Levy Over Three Years

Uintah county commissioners heard the Uintah school board request a four mill levy to raise 28000 annually for three years to fund a new high school on the Uintah Duchesne line. Superintendent H M Lundell and board members urged action, noting bonds may be refunded later and a bond issue is not advisable now. Federal funds of 250000 may aid construction, and architects Fetzer and Fetzer are to begin plans for a modern structure with shops and space for all departments. Indian students would attend on the same terms as others under the bill.

Ute Land Bill Signed by Pres Truman

President Truman signed the Ute land bill to speed final settlements in Court of Claims cases with Indiana and the federal government. The measure directs judgments for surface land value without awaiting mineral or oil valuations and allows partial or full settlements of surface or subsurface claims.

Vernal Street Improvement Bid Accepted by City Council

Cecil Murray of Vernal bid $92,903 for curb, sidewalk and street work in Vernal’s major improvement program. Other bids: Young and Smith Construction $127,400. Wheelwright Construction $97,541. Campbell and Morgan’s $79,397 for curb and gutters only was rejected. First Meetings Held in Duchesne Chapel

First services in the new Duchesne stake and ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were held as the Duchesne ward bishop noted the building’s readiness, with preparations continuing for miners and related events in Byron County.
