Vernal Pioneer Day Parade and Programs Highlight July 24

Vernal plans a Pioneer Day celebration starting with a 10 am parade featuring miniature depictions of Utah pioneer struggles. The Vernal First Ward Sunday School leads the parade, with an 11 am program at the Court House grounds and an afternoon Primary circus parade. Proceeds fund the First Ward chapel building project.

Bartlett farewell for Ashley before mission abroad

Neighbors and friends gathered at C C Bartlett’s home to bid farewell to Ashley who leaves soon for a mission in the northern states. Mrs George Freestore recalled a joke about the ugliest baby born twenty three years ago, named Ashley. The Cottage Hotel opens Monday morning under Arthur Rich and Bert Singleton. The Twenty fourth of July celebration is planned at Burton’s Lake with a ball at Burton’s Hall on July 16. About 400 Ute ponies recently sold for four dollars each will be shipped to Oregon for meat, reflecting abundant grass and fat ponies this season.

Local girl Ada Winders win in Vernal essay contest

Ada Winders of Vernal won the Intermountain Made Foods essay contest with Why you should use Intermountain made foods. Her piece was selected for the Vernal Express last week and reprinted in about eighty papers across Idaho Nevada and Wyoming. The prize was three dollars.

Upcoming activities include a Boy Scout outing July 17 to 21 at Lookout Mountain Moon Lake. Pioneer Day in Vernal July 24 features a benefit at First Ward chapel. Blue Mountain Rodeo at Jensen July 24, with a portion of gross proceeds to Jensen Boy Scouts. Uintah Basin Industrial Convention at Fort Duchesne August 10, 10th annual. Governors Day at UBIC August 10 expects about 20 000 attendees for Governor Henry H Blood tribute.

Partial Payment of 1933 Uintah County Taxes

Uintah County Treasurer Martin W Curtis reports the first partial tax receipt to Ethel Pitt of Vernal as part of a program allowing tax payments in any amount at least ten dollars. Several taxpayers have already used the plan to cover current and delinquent taxes in installments with a reduced penalty and interest if full delinquent amounts are paid, yielding substantial savings for many residents.

Wid West Rodeo at Jensen by Blue Mountain Cowboys

Blue Mountain Cowboys present a rodeo at Haslems Grove near Jensen on July 24 featuring forty bucking horses bulldogging plain and fancy roping and riding. Proceeds aid Jensen Boy Scout Troop 241 with one fourth to the troop. Td Lewis and Joe Haslem head the event with prizes and riders from far regions expected to compete. The annual Basin rodeo aims for larger turnout and scope this year.

Phil Watkins Named New Manager at Allen Cash Store

George Allen, temporary manager in Vernal, will soon depart. Phil Watkins, secured by Allen, will replace N G Hollingshead who left for Tooele. Watkins, known locally, previously worked at Ashley Co-op and the Farm Bureau in Vernal and has Salt Lake experience.

Two Youths Receive Suspended Sentence

Wayne Simper and William Richardson pleaded guilty to a felony charge for taking a vehicle without permission. Judge Abel Turner imposed a suspended one year sentence on each, conditioned on paying the county 3000 for apprehension and court costs plus 30 to Clair Southam for vehicle damages.

Oscar Kirkham to Attend World Scout Jamboree Duties

Oscar A Kirkham scout executive will attend the international Boy Scout jamboree at Godollo Hungary to assume duties as chief Morale officer for the US delegation. He will depart Salt Lake City for New York Tuesday evening joining a large group en route via Hamburg Berlin and Vienna visiting scout officials.

Camp Reinforcement At Bullionville Conservation Camp

Supervisor James O Stewart announces that 76 more men will join the Hillionville Bullton Ville Conservation Corps camp this Friday, bringing total enrollment to 200. Delegations from Uintah, Duchesne, Daggett and Carbon counties fill the quota, while camp activities include flower planting, community events, and a baseball game as the season winds down. Captain Upson praises the camp as the best group he has worked with and notes strong health and progress among the boys.

J C Anderson Becomes Vernal Lions Club President

J C Anderson was elected and assumed the presidency during the Vernal Lions Club luncheon at The Grill. Retiring president J R Frugias passed the duties, with reports from W P Henderson on a Colorado road commission delegation and Winn presenting a plan to boost Vernal band interest and weekly outdoor concerts. The Uintah Basin Boy Scouts of the Timpanogos council plan a four day encampment near Mt Lookout at Moon Lake in Ashley National Forest. About 200 scouts will camp July 17 to 21 with troops supplying their own gear and a balanced menu planned by leaders.

County Agent E Peterson leaves Uintah county after budget cuts to take a supervisor role at Hobble Creek C O camp Higler in Springville. His work saved taxpayers thousands, including a prairie dog eradication drive. His colleagues credit the initiative for the convention’s start eleven years ago.

National park service plans with 1250000 dollars in three years to build ramps trails and a museum at the Dinosaur Monument near Vernal Utah. Funds include 250600 emergency make work through Abe Murdock. Plans detail quarry work north wall fossils, center chamber, and buildings for a museum, administration, and ranger facilities.

Hollis Freestone III Quicker Action Saves Boy

Hollis Freestone III, 15, was taken ill Wednesday morning with suspected spinal meningitis. A rapid medical response saved him. serum was provided for a first inoculation. Frank Rich, visiting from Salt Lake City, traveled to Roosevelt in one and a half hours for a second inoculation. Rich and his family have two sons in Ashley Valley hospital, one for appendicitis and one for tonsillitis.

Glenn H. Muller Named Uintah Representative

Glenn H Muller a local plumber and Democratic county chairman was appointed by Governor Blood to represent Uintah county in the Utah state legislature. He arrived in Vernal in 1999 from Oakland California and has ties with the Lions Club American Legion Red Cross. The appointment took effect July 8 and he is in Salt Lake City for a special legislative session.
