Vernal Project Wins Big Yes Vote in Uintah County

Voters in Uintah Water Conservancy District approved the Vernal Project by 1317 to 22, paving the way for Steinaker Reservoir to supply water for irrigation across 14,871 acres and municipal use in Vernal Maeser Naples and surrounding areas. Returns by precincts show broad support and funding was included in Senate Public Works, with House not yet. Local officials expect construction to start this year pending conferees.

National Park Bid Urges Dinosaur Monument Status

Conservation leaders urged U.S. Senate action to grant national park status to the Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. Hay Derrick Mishap Injures Louis Osiek At MecCo Ranch

Louis Osiek aged 63 of 143 3rd North sustained a broken arm and hip in a Monday accident at the MecCo ranch near Glines. The 4 pm mishap occurred when a hay derrick toppled a part of the structure. Dale and John McCoy, nearby workers, heard the cry and helped summon aid, with Osiek later transferred to Salt Lake City for treatment.

Forest fire consumes 300 acres near Dry Fork

A weekend blaze near Dry Fork three miles southeast of Paradise Reservoir scorched over 300 acres of young and mature timber. Lightning likely sparked the fire which started about 1 pm Thursday and drew more than 100 Forest Service personnel at its peak. Crews brought it under control by Saturday 10 am under District Ranger Val Simpson’s command. Authorities warned fire precautions must be strict in dry conditions. A second fire was reported from Antelope Creek ten miles southeast of Duchesne, prompting Indian Service crews to respond.

Senate Advances Vernal Project Funding in Public Works Bill

The Senate approved a Public Works bill allocating 1 million to start the Vernal Project this fall. Other funds include 10,980,335 for Flaming Gorge, 770,000 for Glen Canyon planning, and 203,000 for transmission lines. Len Watkins notes 100 million has already been allotted for the Upper Colorado River Project, now in year two. Funeral Rites for Charles C Rich Held Saturday

Funeral services for Charles Coulson Rich Jr aged 70 were held Saturday at 2 pm in the Internal First Ward chapel.
