Uintah High appoints AVJIL and Norwood Hardy principal

The Uintah High School assistant principal Rondon Harmon is named Ashley Valley Junior High principal. Norwood Hardy, formerly elementary principal of Whiterocks, will replace Harmon at Uintah High. Announcement made by A Don Batty, Board of Education president, after a special meeting.

Uintah County valued at record in current year

Preliminary reports indicate Uintah County will post a record 15 212 000 assessed valuation for 1058, up about 20 percent from last year’s 18 000 000. If confirmed, the mill levy will be held at last year’s level. otherwise a four mill increase is expected.

Dam Contractor Representatives Visit in Vernal

Representatives of Peter Krecit and Sons of Obama Nebraska, prime contractor on Training Gorge Dam, visited Vernal to meet with local Chamber officials. Flying in were Ben Williams, Douglas Baker, Frank Wimmer, and Richard Coyne. Baker outlined plans for a workers camp at Dutch John, housing about 450 to 650 employees. Preliminary plans begin after July 4 with definite plans by month end. A road from Dutch John to the canyon rim and to the left abutment is planned, and diversion tunnel work will start in spring with diversion during low water.

Dinosaur National Monument funding totals face next year

The National Park Service plans $606,100 for Dinosaur National Monument in the new fiscal year starting July 1, 1958, with $473,900 for roads and trails and $122,500 for campsites and site improvements. Zion Park receives $847,000, including a visitor center and south entrance road. other monuments like Bryce Canyon and Arches receive substantial amounts for buildings, utilities, and access projects.

Uintah High graduates plan to attend college

Senator Tella and Senator Wallace F Bennett disclosed that 04 percent of Uintah High School seniors expect to go to college this year, compared with a state average of 793 percent. A questionnaire to seniors across Utah, coordinated with school principals, shows fields of interest ranging from physical and social sciences to medical and business, with 68 indicating plans to further education.

State Opens Bids On Access Strip To Dam Site

Utah State Road Commission opened bids Tuesday for the 446 til es of access road to Flaming Gorge Dam from Greendale Junction. Apparent low bid 433,044 by Union Construction Co of Murray. Engineer's estimate 426,000. Union Construction builds Red Springs to Greendale Junction section. The road will extend from Vernal to the dam site as a 244 in road with bituminous surface, to be completed in 160 working days.

Vernal Project Vote Set Tuesday for $6 874 000 Water System

Uintah Water Conservancy District voters decide on the Vernal Project also known as Steinaker Draw to supply irrigation water for 14 871 acres and 1 600 acre feet annually for Vernal Maeser and Naples plus new culinary water for Ghines Davis and Ashley. The plan includes a Steinaker Reservoir storage, construction of canals and a municipal pipeline, recreation facilities, and fish development. Voting details appear on page 10.

Uintah Cattle Association Plans Visit Miles City Montana

About 30 members and their spouses will travel from Vernal on Tuesday for the association’s eighth annual educational tour to Miles City Montana. Stops include Sheridan and a Range Experimental Station in Miles City to study calf marketing breeding performance testing and range improvements. The group will bid farewell after visiting Miles City with routes home varying. some may visit Yellowstone Park.

Senate group adds $1 million for Vernal unit

A Senate subcommittee bumped public works funds by one million dollars to start Vernal Project construction on July 1. Senator Arthur W Watkins said the panel, after an afternoon session, left intact the $70 million approved by the House for the Upper Colorado Storage Project earmarked for Glen Canyon and Flaming Gorge.
