Son of Dan Beard Named Park Custodian
Deaniel D Beard of Oriana Nebraska assumed custodianship of Dinosaur National Monument. He succeeds Harold Ratcliff who is moving to the Region TIE office in Santa Fe as ecologist and will oversee range studies nationwide. Beard, son of the famed Dan Beard founder of the Boy Scouts of America, came from the Region II office in Omaha where he was regional biologist. He joined the service in 1934 as a wildlife technician, worked in eastern states, Florida, and Washington headquarters before taking the Omaha post in 1940. The 206 065 acre Dinosaur site is known for wilderness and fossil quarries with many tons of bones moved.

Vernal Youths Win Commissions in Engineers
Two Vernal youths enlisting as privates in Co. B 115th Engineers Utah National Guard have been commissioned as second lieutenants in the U S Army. Milburn of Vernal, a former UHS basketball star, received his commission June 21 at Fort Belvoir and was transferred to Camp Pickett Va. Courture, son in law of the Milburns, also trained at Fort Belvoir and commissioned a second lieutenant on July 4. Continued on page four.

Gusher Postoffice Burns Destroying Office and Home
Monday morning the Gusher Postoffice and home of Postmaster Homer Haines were destroyed by fire. The blaze started in the kitchen range and spread to the partition wall. Only chimneys remained. neighbors saved some belongings. A postal inspector arrived, and a temporary office opened next door. Estimated loss runs to several thousand dollars.

Funeral Services Held Friday For Ford D. Lyman
The funeral services for Ford D. Lyman age 5 were held at Verte Ward Chapel Friday at 4:00 pm Bishop Owen Alaugh officiated. Death occurred June 20 from inhaling gas fumes from a large gasoline tank in the garage at the Lyman home. The child opened the eight inch intake at the top while playing alone. Howard Lyman found him about three hours later. The grave was dedicated by George W. Bartlett and prayer at the home by Arthur Manwaring.

American Legion To Sponsor Scrap Metal Drive
At Witbeck Post No 11 executive meeting in Uinted State Bank, the Legion pledged a scrap metal drive to start after the scrap rubber campaign. A committee led by Winnie Lee organized the effort. a July 22 outing with the Legion Auxiliary is planned at Siddeway’s meadow. A $200 fund may buy Legion uniforms, aiming for members to wear official attire by the Vernal district convention in October.

School Board Seeks Levy For 1942 43 Budget
At the June 30 meeting the Board of Education president H Grant West asked county commissioners to approve an $80,000 maintenance fund for aircool facilities from July 1 1942 to June 30 1943 plus 69607 for interest and 8000 for matured bonds totaling 877,607. He asked 12 mills for operating expenses and 4 152 mills for debt service. The commissioners took the request under advisement.

Scrap Rubber Drive Collected 106000 Pounds in Uintah County
H. S. Sowards, chairman of the Uintah county scrap rubber drive, reports at noon Thursday that over 106000 pounds have been collected locally with expectations of adding at least another ton before completion. Uintah county’s state HQ quota was 38000 pounds, and Sowards notes this total exceeds Vernal’s collection alone. A full local station rating and amounts will appear next week.

Uintah County reports raising 375 dollars for the USO, surpassing a 3250 goal by 123. Prank Slaugh, treasurer, said a 2125 amount remained to be added to last week’s 250 sent to National headquarters. Oaks Park Reservoir Draws 200 Anglers This Weekend
Oaks Park reservoir drew more than 200 anglers during the holiday weekend as residents of Ashley Valley and eastern Utah enjoyed fishing and camping. Deputy Henry Slaugh reported several two to three pound trout were caught and most visitors came from the valley. Green Lakes also hosted many vacationers with ample camping and ideal waters for trout fishing.
