Challenger Names Vernal Station Head

Robert L. Bob Anderson a Challenger Air Lines employee since 1947 is named Vernal station manager. A Greeley Colo native and former Billings Mont senior agent he joined in September 1947 and plans to pursue instructor rating. Unmarried flyer attached to the 10th Mountain Division in WWII learned to fly in Greeley. Bill Kirkwood newly arrived from Kemmerer Wyo has taken duties as station agent with Challenger.

Vernal Rodeo Week Events Set July 14 to 16

Night shows and queen selection at the county fair grounds mark the Vernal rodeo season. Queen candidates ride through town Friday at 6 pm before competing for Miss Vernal and Miss Uintah at 7:30 pm. Dances run July 14 15 and 16 at Imperial Hall with prizes and a pony give away on July 16. Concessions bids cover nightly payments of 135 dollars. Parade prizes of 50 30 and 20 for floats plus 15 and 10 for best boy and girl will be awarded. Local chamber and Kiwanis bids debated and Kirby stock preview praised to boost attendance.

Uintah County Homecoming Parade and Queen Contest Highlight Events

A county wide celebration on July 24 centers on a mammoth parade and a Homecoming Queen chosen from Uintah county women aged 16 to 25. Entries with name age and address due July 18 to Mrs. Lorene Anderson Vernal. Judges will assess personality and charm. The festivity includes chapel dedications and the new Uintah county hospital with public invitations issued by Harold E Hullinger.

New Garage Opens and Station Changes Managers

Official opening of the Slaugh Motor Co showroom service station and garage at 5th East and Main celebrated Friday. The 110 by 64 foot building began April 11 at about $50,000. Slaugh is a Pontiac Cadillac and Diamond T dealer with a body and Fender shop. Mrs Amanda Johnson Visits Salt Lake City Relative

Mrs Amanda Johnson of Salt Lake City visits daughter Mrs Arden W Shepherd for a week. Accompanied by Mrs Shepherd, Johnson flew to Salt Lake City Monday via Challenger. Shepherd then returned to Vernal the next day.

Oil activity advances at Jensen and nearby wells

Oil field notes report Caldwell No. 1 at 4000 feet with 240 feet in Weber Utah Vernal. Moore County tests and location plans follow within 30 days as testing continues on Moore well. Ute Tribal No 1 near Ft Duchesne halted after a 36 hour test at about 1600 bpd.

Wells Ashby Dies At Maeser Home

Stephen Wells Ashby 64 died at his Maeser home on Tuesday July 5 after a lingering illness. Born August 30 1884 in Lake Shore Utah County he moved to Ashby Valley in 1900 and lived there since. He was active in LDS church roles and served in multiple wards and stake organizations. He married Ambrosine Hackjing on August 30 1906 in the Salt Lake Temple. Survived by sons Rulon Harold Ashby and Ward A Ashby. daughters Thora Hall Ann Oldham. 16 grandchildren. brothers Don C Ashby Elias Ashby. sisters Atta Murray Leona Hall Mary Smith. Local Farmers Discuss Union Program

National Farmers Union and Utah Cooperative Association crews have contacted Ashley valley farmers to plan a Ver nal petroleum cooperative. G N Hamm said several thousand dollars have been pledged. Meetings were held at Davis and Glines LDS chapels with more set for Naples on July 9 and Maeser on July 11 at 830 pm. A film explains cooperative activity and invites public questions.

DDT Spraying Project Discussed Citywide

City discussions underway for a DDT spraying program to reduce flies and mosquitoes. Dr. F G Eskelson the city physician supports the plan and urges citizen participation. Ken McLean of Maeser IGA has submitted a bid. homeowners would pay $1 to $2 per house if half participate. Project aims to finish before Homecoming celebrations.

Oil Worker Hurt Slightly in Car Truck Mishap

An oil worker named Speck Strong received hand cuts in a minor collision between a truck and a passenger vehicle at 7 30 a m Tuesday on 2nd East and 2nd South in Vernal. Joshua Hall, the county road supervisor and driver of the other vehicle, was uninjured. A utility pole at the intersection was struck and knocked down for the second time this year.

Airline unveils get acquainted fare to promote Challenger service

Ver nal station manager Robert L. Anderson announced a new get acquainted fare to introduce Challenger Air Lines airplanes to first time flyers and curious travelers. Round trip at one and one quarter of the normal one way fare allows short visits to neighboring towns with two day limit and no advance reservations. Heaths Return From Salt Lake City Visit
