A rousing reception will greet Challenger Airlines first flight to Vernal at 8 am opening day events at the airport. Denver president and manager will be aboard the inaugural flight, with Donald Duffing directing the airlines program and a breakfast at Hotel Vernal at 8 30 am.
Dr. E F Thomas, a Colorado A and M graduate, will start a Vernal Basin practice on July 5 and plans to marry Virginia B Rouse of Fort Collins on June 30. He is a former scout and Alpha Phi Omega member. his bride served in the WAVES. Lions Club support facilitated his basin arrival amid a July 1 Challenger event schedule featuring air shows and free rides for ticket holders.
Carter Oil Co announces a new Utah oil field discovery at Ute Tribal No 1 eight miles north of Ft Duchesne with initial flow 180 bpd rising after open to 6570 bpd. Highlights include geology, sulfur content, gas oil ratio, and ongoing testing as Carter drills multiple wells in Uintah basin including Cald well No 2 and Ashley field developments. Nine Vernal boys named for Boys State July 5 16 at Point of the Mountain Salt Lake County with local sponsors and civic leaders.
Clifford and Mary Hartley thank kind residents of Tridell for generous help that eased their settlement in the area. They credit unseen supporters and the Gospel for making the move to this “promised land” memorable and express heartfelt appreciation. Prudential Housing Corp of Salt Lake City bids to aid Vernal families with low cost homes this summer. Rep A Cafarelli said materials plans and contractors are ready. Homes from 7000 dollars can be built this summer with a lot and 10 percent payment, in partnership with Campbell Construction Co.
Boyd Winn, son of Mr and Mrs Golden Winn of Lapoint, suffered a serious head injury when his car left a high embankment and rolled to the bottom of a dugway Friday morning June 24. The crash occurred a few miles from Lapoint on the road to Vernal. he received medical care and needed seven stitches for the head wound.
Vernal city fire department was summoned Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. to extinguish a small rear fire at the Commercial hotel. Cause unknown but likely a gas explosion in the stoker. Damage reported as slight.
Petroleum Company reported Sunday that results at the Elk Springs well are favorable with a total depth of 5610 feet indicating positive production potential for the field.
Donald A. Duff, 44, president and managing director of Challenger Airlines, spans a career from 1930 in aviation. He held roles at Pittsburg Aviation Industries, Pennsylvania Airlines, Northeast Airlines, Continental Airlines, and formed Challenger, rising to chairman, president, and managing director by 1949.
Vern W. Gifford was elected president of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce at a noon luncheon in Hotel Vernal. J.D. Jones of J C Penney Co was named vice president and Lawrence Siddeway of Utah Motor Co secretary treasurer. Board members include B H Stringham Francis Feltech George Roth Dale Jensen N J Meagher Jr Stewart Ashton Hugh W Colton Don Batty Charles Henderson A P Voorhies C R Hopkins and Leland Sowards.
Invitations for the Uintah homecoming July 22 to 25 have been sent to former basin residents. Hundreds are expected to attend the gala. LDS ward bishops plan dedication services for July 23 and 24. Dr. Ray E. Spendlove invites organizations to enter floats. Archy Johnson notes rapid progress at the Third ward stake center. Ward reunions set for July 22 and family reunions July 23. The Vernal rodeo runs July 14 to 16 attracting early arrivals.
Lorraine Hullinger daughter of Mr and Mrs Jess Hullinger and Alterra high school student received the American award for FHA achievements at a regional convention in Santa Barbara California It was the second such national recognition for the FHA Other Uintah county girls Elaine Taylor Lela Moosman and Lela Bartlett also attended the convention
Mr and Mrs Royal Bates and their two daughters Marilyn and Carol departed Vernal today en route to their home in San Diego California after spending several days with Dr and Mrs Loyd Shimmin.
Vernal City council at a special meeting voted to ask the governor for immediate rent decontrol. A hearing on the question was held June 20 at the county court house. Mayor Stringham said city officials were obligated to seek decontrol since no objections were heard. Landlords report vacancies, but many will remain closed to renters until decontrol takes effect.
Vernal city marshal Jack L. Boren won first place in a free-for-all pistol match at the 27th annual Utah Peace Officers Association convention in Logan. Attending from Uintah basin were Boren, State Trooper Sammy Hatch, and Harry Sprouse of Roosevelt. The 1950 convention site was voted for Vernal after competition with Ogden, Provo and other Utah cities.
An air force B 29 wrecked and burned last Thursday at 1 30 p m near Artesia Colorado but all 11 aboard escaped injury during a training flight from Rapid City South Dakota to Denver Colorado The plane landed on the Artesia field when one motor caught fire and overshot the field scattering wreckage for about half a mile
Frank R. Emery the state representative for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will organize a volunteer workers unit in Uintah County on July 7. A 2:30 p.m. meeting will be held at Central School Library with all interested invited. Emery will address Vernal Kiwanis Club that evening. Mrs. Jeffries and others attended the mountain states area conference of women advisers of the foundation.
Utah stream silt levels reach half and threaten private range land. A Golden Kilburn USAC extension conservationist warned at the Utah Soil Conservation Districts Assn directors meeting. E S Gardner and Hugh W Colton led the sessions with 17 directors and wives at Hotel Verpat Ashley valley tour. Kilburn praised state federal cooperation on government land projects.
The Vernal rodeo committee ruled that queen candidates must ride in street parades at least four times before the rodeo on July 14 to 16. Outside-area queens will receive horse pasture and care, and girls of any age may ride with parental consent. Spectator applause will count about one third in judging, and a pony and saddle will be given away at the final dance.
Vernal JC Womans and community members embrace a busy Lets Go Western theme promoting a colorful rodeo July 14 to 16 and a Uintah LDS homecoming. Prizes will honor best dressed cowboy and cowgirl and beard growth. Daniel Price earns a dentistry degree from Western Reserve University as 1210 graduates receive degrees.
