Former Vernal Mayor Dies at Son's Home

Edward D Samuels three times mayor of Vernal died Monday evening at his son's home in Vernal after a trip from Salt Lake City. He had served as mayor in 1910 31 1914 15 and 1916 87 and was a civic builder. He and wife Clara Fisher Samuels moved to Ashley Valley in 1800 to pursue livestock.

Pioneer Ashley Mother Buried Near Home

Mary Adelia Lambert Gibson, a pioneer and Ash ley Valleys beloved figure, was buried near her home in a funeral held Thursday night at 11 in the Ashley ward chapel. Bishop Al ma Preece presided with the Ashe ley ward bishopric directing. Relatives neighbors and many friends gathered to honor a woman known as the Mother of Ashley Ward. A ladies chorus provided music with songs including Know That My Redeemer Lives That Beautiful Land and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.

Asphalt Plant Operations to Start February Fifteen

The Utah state asphalt plant seven miles west of Vernal will begin operations within two weeks to mine and treat more than seven thousand tons of asphalt for US 40 in Twists Canyon. Three shifts run 24 hours a day with an electric light plant for night work. Workers are selected through the government re employment office.

Aged Stockman of Hill Creek Section Buried In Vernal Last Week

Charles Arthur Williams, 62, died January 19 at Ashley Valley hospital from double pneumonia. Born 1853 in Bloomington Iowa, he moved to the Hill Creek area years ago and worked as a stockman. Survived by two sons, one in Ouray Valley and one in Montana. Funeral services led by Rev George E Guild of the Congregational Church were held last Thursday, interment at Rock Point cemetery.

Mrs Jane Loftus county health nurse visited western schools Monday finding nearly impassable reeds and mud in the Tridell area. She attended a PTA meeting in Tridell that evening.

Funeral Rites for James McConnell in Vernal

Funeral services for James McConnell a Vernal plumber 60 who died of pneumonia were held in the Vernal First Ward chapel with Second Ward bishopric officiating. Surviving relatives include a California brother and a sister in Alberta. Interment followed at Vermah cemetery with Swain Funeral Home in charge.

Civic Clubs Push for Completion of U S 40

At a Roosevelt meeting of Associated Civic clubs of Eastern Utah Fred Ferron was elected president with J C Anderson Vernal and H B Liddell Duchesne as officers. Topics included completing U S 40 through the Windham and Strawberry Valleys, road repairs and oiling from Daniels Canyon to the Colorado line, and opposition to the Calder Senate Bill reallocating 10 percent of the gasoline tax to cities. A legislative and roads committee were named with members from Heber City Vernal Myton Duchesne Roosevelt and Weber City.

Mr and Mrs J Ratliff Visit Vernal from Denver

Mr and Mrs J 1 Ratliff lived in Vernal Saturday after Mrs Ratliff visited Denver for weeks. Mrs Ratliff left for Vernal a day before Mr Ratliff, but bad roads delayed him. He traveled via US 49 and directions through U 8 56 and Boggs. Mr Ratliff planned to depart ten days later for Montana.

Uintah County Eyes State Aid for Roads and FERA Plan

Uintah county officials plan to form a county planning board to submit FERA projects. The group will catalog needs, ready projects for approval, and coordinate with FERA leaders to ease relief efforts. Discussions covered road work from Vernal to Bietnaker Draw, mountain snow measurements, and funding impacts from gas tax shifts.

Vernal Gun Club Plans Late February Entertainment

At a meeting of officers and committee chairmen held at the Didah State Bank directors' room, the Vernal Gun Club decided to stage an entertainment in the latter part of February. The event will feature boxing bouts, screenings of Green River pictures, and a talk by state game commissioner Newell Cook. Alton Hatch chairs the arrangements with Glenn H. Miller, J R Douglass, J Emery Johnson, P. L. Cowan, and D H Young named in leadership roles.
