Postal Receipts Show Sharp Gain in Vernal

Postmaster Pontha Calder reported Vernal post office receipts for 1040 rose 13.5 percent from 1048. Receipts for 1048 were $20,213.21, while 1948 receipts reached $34,183.65. The office issues over $110,000 in money orders and postal notes each quarter.

Knife and Fork Club to Hear Jurist Jan 16

Judge George W. Hardy, a Louisiana second circuit appellae judge and former mayor, will address Uintah Knife and Fork club members at Hotel Vernal Monday evening Jan 16. Uintah Farmers Advised On 1949 Tax Returns

Uintah residents including farmers stockmen and laborers were reminded to file 1949 income tax returns by January 33 1950 if their 1948 gross income exceeded 600. Deputy collector LeRoy W Smith of Price outlined filing options and said March 15 extends if an estimated tax declaration is filed by January 15. He and Cole Smith noted many already paid through withholdings but all must file. forms 1040 or 1040A require six original withholding statements.

Mrs. Thelma Wallis Ruppel Dies After Illness in Salt Lake City

Thelma Wallis Ruppel 42 of Roosevelt died Saturday at 3:15 am in Salt Lake Hospital from asthma. Funeral held Monday at 12:30 pm at 124 Fourth East Salt Lake City with burial in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Survived by husband William H. Ruppel Jr, sister of William B. Tiny School Girl Struck by Truck Near Naples Ward Chapel

Dighton Dashel Evans, six, daughter of Mr Evans of Naples, was struck by a truck in front of the Naples Ward Chapel at noon Tuesday while walking from behind two school buses. The driver was not charged. She did not require medical attention but will miss some school days to recover from injuries.

Driver Steers Bus Off Road to Avert Tragedy

At 7 30 p m Friday on Highway 40 eleven miles west of Vernal a Salt Lake City Denver bus driver chose a 20 foot embankment over a collision when a stalled Roosevelt man’s car and a school bus blocked the highway. The passenger bus swerved into a ditch sideswiping the auto. nine passengers were shaken but uninjured. Sheriff officers ferried them away and all continued their fares. Both vehicles were badly damaged.

Unusual Pictorial Exhibits Set for Uintah High

Three 24 panel Life magazine prepared displays will show at Uintah High School this week. Last week featured eighteenth century England pictures while January 16 to 20 brings the Protestant Revolution series to the Seminary. A library exhibit on Atomic Energy runs all week from 8:30 am to 4:25 pm prepared with the U S Atomic Energy Commission guidance. The exhibit argues atomic energy is not only scientific but involves social and political questions with practical uses emphasized for lay understanding.

County and Vernal City to Extend Fire Service Agreement

The Vernal City Council and the County Commission agreed Tuesday to extend fire service to county residents. Details will be released soon. County resident warnings against calling in brush fires were reiterated as unnecessary calls drain resources. Chairman June Manwaring urged residents not to call unless needed to protect homes and buildings. Other topics included joint city county operation of a nearby plant, cash basis service exchanges, Ashley reservoir stock, and the city county swimming pool. Taxes Due for Pets Urged by City Manager Taylor

Vernal city manager Aeroy Taylor reminded dog owners that January taxes are due. Rates are 2 dollars per year for males and 5 dollars for females. Dogs must wear metal-plate collars and be registered. late or unpaid taxes may lead to enforcement actions. Dogs must be kept indoors after sunset and not allowed near schools or parks.
