Museum Seeks 3400 To Return Exhibits To Uintah County

Citizens are urged to raise 3400 to defray shipping and crating costs to return fossils from the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh to Uintah County's Field Home of Natural History. The State provides 1500 and Linns Club offers 500. state aid is declined beyond that. If funded, the museum would reach improved exhibits and attract more visitors.

Oil News Hints At Spring Drilling In Uintah Area

Weather delays have paused drilling in Uintah County while predictions point to renewed activity in spring. The Six-Stewart No 1 Hullinger well in Ashley Valley is expected to reach Weberland this week with Kerr McGee as contractor and Edward Baxendale directing postings. Fullinger may be the last Ashley Valley well. Jully Oil Co reports wells in production but plans to wait for warmer months. California Oil Co’s No 1 Goshear Unit near Vernal sits at 5100 feet in a tight hole. Roy Johnson of Ardmore is rumored to plan a Weber sand test near Bonanza per Rocky Mountain Oil Reporter.

1950 Auto Plates On Sale Here At Court House

Auto license plates for 1950 go on sale at Uintah County courthouse with 2,000 sets received. Sales run Wednesday Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 5 pm in Vernal area offices. Purchasers must pay property taxes before plates can be issued and can use the new orange and muscle style plates.

First 1950 baby born in Uintah County

The Uintah County Hospital welcomed Robert Eugene Evans on New Year’s Day 1950 at a.m. to Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Evans of Vernal. The eight pound seven ounce boy is Uintah’s first 1950 baby, beating rival Susan Merri to the honor by minutes, born at the Corn Hospital at 12 25 on December 31. Susan weighed seven pounds two ounces. The Express greets Vernal with welcome.

Shorthorn Raisers Plan Uintah Basin Milking Shorthorn Association

A Roosevelt meeting at the Frontier Grille led to forming the Uintah Basin Milking Shorthorn Association. Organizing meeting set for January 14, 1950 at 8:00 PM in Roosevelt with key organizers from Altarmon Randlett Roosevelt and Vernal. Cupid's Aim In Uintah Proves Poor For 1949

Cupid's tally in Uintah County fell in 1949 with 82 marriages down from 112 in 1948. Gordon Richards and Opal Shiner, both of Vernal, were the last couple licensed in December. Divorces also dropped sharply from 112 in 1948 to 14 in 1949, a loss of 98.

Vernal-Lapoint Highway Snarl Aired At Meeting

At a joint meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and Uintah County officials held Tuesday at Hotel Vernal, plans were outlined to straighten and improve the Vernal-Lapoint road. The State Road Commission reported on its December 16 meeting about building a Lapoint south to Highway 40 route, with the state proposing abandonment of the present road and placing maintenance on the county. The commissioners opposed abandoning the Vernal-Lapoint road and insisted on state improvement of the existing route to forestall a southern highway piecemeal plan.

Naples Woman's Feed Sack Quilt Wins Show Prize

Naples resident Mrs. Arthur Harrison won one of two top prizes for a feed sack quilt at the State Turkey Show in Salt Lake City. The award was a cast aluminum prize, announced by Uintah County home demonstration agent Mrs. Freda S. Davis. The exhibit featured clothing, dish towels, and quilts from homemakers across the state. Also noted is a visit by Jay H. Cooper and family from Los Angeles, with Cooper employed at Northrop Aircraft.

Oil And Gas Leases Faced With New Utah Policy

Geologist Verne Farmer of Carter Oil Co. notes state lands may be suspended or leased under special conditions to spur development in Utah. Conditions include drilling within six months of lease, lands designated by geological survey as suitable for unitization, or lands shown to be in a drilling unit. Uintah County commissioners approved a tentative 1950 budget totaling 177,078 dollars at Vernal courthouse. Veterans to Receive GI Insurance Refunds Nationwide

About 2,000 Uintah County veterans and 3,500 nearby in Vernal will receive roughly 2.8 billion dollars in GI insurance refunds, starting January 16. Checks range 90 cents to 528 dollars, averaging around 175. The Veterans Administration hopes to mail 200,000 checks in a party or 1,000,000 weekly, with 14.2 million applications filed.

County Nurses Get State Car Allocation

Three Men Face Trials In Uintah County District Court

Pace and two others appeared before Judge Millecam in Vernal last Thursday on cattle theft charges. Bond reduced from 2500 to 1500 as counsel sought evidence. Arrested by Uintah County Sheriff Herb Snyder for threats and cattle rustling from the Raymond Elmer farm north of Alterra. No clear identification of Medride sound or further details provided.
