Uintah County farmers are urged to adopt larger farm sizes and fewer producers to stay viable. Ex tension officials say recent sales did not add to farm size, highlight barley variety trials with potential yields up 45 percent, and discuss Sputnik era changes influencing home and agriculture.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1100 am in the Ashley Ward chapel for Minnie J Atwood a former Vernal resident who died Tuesday in St Helens Oregon after a long illness of old age. Friends may visit Vernal Mortuary Sunday and before the service Monday. Born March 20 1976 at Vernal she was a daughter of Alma James and Loretta Henry Johnston. She married Charley B Atwood Jr and had four children three living. Surviving are sons Terryl Atwood Salem Oregon Ivan Atwood formerly of Idaho now in Oregon and Wendell Atwood of California five brothers George Darrell Johnston Vernal Owen Johnston Warren Ore two sisters Elizabeth Starvey and LaGene Marshall and Joseph and William Johnston San Jose California.
Fire destroyed the Lawrence C. Wall residence in Randlett on Saturday afternoon completely leveled the two story landmark located near Avalon Ward chapel. Mrs Wall, 77, widow, lived there with her sister in law Mianneah Maris. Firefighters arrived in time but neighbors helped remove furniture and clothing before the blaze.
Senator Arthur V Watkins plans to request appropriations for the Flaming Gorge project from the Bureau of the Budget, the Senate and House committees, and the Interior Department. He believes supporters will be surprised by the requested amount. The Vernal Chamber of Commerce reported the details after Royal Henderson, chair of the Upper Colorado River committee, relayed a Salt Lake City meeting with Watkins and Governor Clyde. Henderson noted the discussion as satisfactory, with other attendees reviewing efforts by Len Bennett and Dennett to secure funds while stressing bipartisan backing at local and state levels to avoid political harm. Washington sources say the Bureau of Reclamation will not seek bids without higher funding this year, and Interior Department officials say the request is too small to anchor an advertisement for the prime contract.
Alonzo fr Tropkin of Woodruff Utah leads Utah delegation to the American National Cattlemen’s Assn meeting in Oklahoma City with 4000 cattlemen from 26 cities. He says the Utah group will oppose price supports for beef cattle and criticizes federal grazing policies on public lands as threatening future grazing. Hugh W. Colton of Utah Cattlemen’s Assn attends as vice president.
Two judging teams the 411 team and the FFA team depart Bam county building Saturday morning for the Denver Livestock Show. Sponsors Grant Southam and Victor Wilkins with Wm Farnsworth guiding the groups. Members include Brent Hacking Cody Jenkins Keith Hagley Robert Harris Glade Southam Everett Southam Bob Hunting Ralph Southam and Harold Dudley with Doyle Landon absent. In Denver they will visit the U S Mint Swift Packing Plant the natural history museum and attend the rodeo stock show.
Four people were injured Sunday afternoon in a three car collision on US 40, five miles north of Heber. Vernal residents Dus Hatch, Eva Hatch, and Marion Smith, along with Mountain View, Wyoming resident Don Carpenter, were treated at Heber Hospital. Carpenter towed a third car when a tire blew on the towing vehicle, causing it to veer into the Hatch car. Carpenter and Smith are BYU students.
Thirteen women completed the Ned rece jand Civils Defense fund first aid training course. The class was taught by Mrs. Sadie McConkie under the sponsorship of Ashley Stake Teller Society and included Arlyg Cletcher, Sharon Olsen, Ardith Hodgkinson, Vera Allred, Tillie Bell, Amy Cook, Pearl Sincer, Wilma Kendall, Sherry Sums, Maurita Batty, Belle Perry, and Mary Dickson.
County commissioners seek sealed bids on a new county building estimated at 400000 with a 5 percent bid bond. Proposals due February 4 at 2 pm and public bid opening in the county clerk's office. Architects in Salt Lake City available for plans after January 14. Also seeking bids for 400000 public building bonds dated February 1 1953 at 4 percent. Ballot notes on license fee protests and Little League diamond funding approved for fairgrounds.
Utah woolgrowers meeting opened with sharp criticism of continued grazing reductions on federal lands. They urged cooperation among users and agencies to resolve the dispute while noting deteriorating relations with Forest Service personnel and calls for range improvements and fair treatment across permits.
Chester A Thomas, president of Utah State Wildlife Federation, will be the guest speaker at the Vernal Gun Club annual meeting. Members and interested parties are urged to contact Mrs McConkie or the ward Relief Society president for details and attendance.
A gun club will meet Saturday at 7 45 pm at 7 11 Cafe. The business session will elect a new president, vice president, and four two year directors. Three directors to be held over are Daly C Jensen, Carl Searle, and Duane Paulson. Outgoing officers Dale C Jensen as president and Carl Searle as vice president. Outgoing directors Beirnell Slaws, Alvin Kay, Ralph Preece and Lyman Merkley. Isla King serves as secretary.
Funeral services were held for Mrs Mary Sofia Elizabeth Lybbert Merrell 80 a Vernal resident who died Sunday at 3:00 a.m. at her daughter's home. Naples Ward bishopric directed the service with Bishop Morris Cook conducting. Speakers Dyron Goodrich Arthur Manwaring and others paid tribute to her life of service. Included were musical numbers led by Mrs Lloyd Yope and a duet by Mrs Ols Erickson and Frank Walker. (Continued on page 8)
