Chains Propose Peace Plan In Tax Control
Chains propose delaying the 1042 referendum on the Utah chain stores tax until after the war to support a united defense by all grocers. The Utah Chain Stores Association urged postponement in a proposal to the Utah Retail Grocers Association. The plan, signed by H Tracy Cher as president of the chain stores association and A D Stewart of the retail grocers association, would defer if a special session occurs before August 4, 1942. It notes the tax could reach $500 per year per outlet and up to $5000 per store established after the act’s effective date, aiming to expose chains by slow death through freezing. Attorney General Giles has ruled the freezing clause unconstitutional.

All Set for Sport International Sportsmen's Show

Ickes Plans Developing Utah Resources
Secretary Ickes endorses a vast western resources program to develop mines and power. A bill to enact the plan will be introduced by Senator O Mahoney. Hazelbush Installed as New Defense Council Head
W R Hazelbush was appointed by the county commissioners to lead the defense council after Mr. Henderson was thanked for organizing the county defense unit. A US 40 advertising plan was presented by R C Gooper Henry Schaefermeyer Charles R Henderson and Francis Feltch for attracting tourists to Uintah County with an $15 000 campaign budget. Vernal City would bear roughly $200 to $60 from the county and merchants $300 with total county support around $750.

A mass meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p m at the county courthouse. Chairman J Ray McKee of the board of county commissioners calls the gathering to discuss and prepare projects for a larger meeting at Roosevelt. Funeral Held For Auto Crash Victim
A large crowd attended funeral services in the Vernal ward chapel for Tescoe J. Hall, fatally injured in an automobile crash near Galt Lake Sunday. Speakers included Lewis Van Massey and H. B. Calder. floral arrangements were by Mrs. James Chivers and Mrs. Irvin Eaton. The service featured multiple musical selections and end with interment in Vernal. Pallbearers included Miley Hall and Emmett Hall among others. A second obituary note mentions Rock Hish, 42, of Tooele, fatally injured after a wreck on Sunday.

Valley Pioneer Celebrates 80th Birthday
Caroline Hunting Chivers of Ashby Valley marked her 80th birthday with an open house from 2 to 6 PM at her son James Olivers home and a birthday dinner with over twenty guests. Born near Malad Idaho, she joined John T. Chivers in 1884 in the Logan LDS temple and the couple settled in Ashish Valley Riverdale ward. She remained active in the LDS church, previously heading the ward Primary and teaching Relief Society. Her husband died in 1922. she later moved to Vernal and has eight children and numerous descendants.

Claudius Dank a Verna amateur ski stuntman wowed spectators at the Steamboat Springs winter carnival. He uses a 239 foot wire and 108 glow globes on a 700 foot run, with 23 fish-tail ski tips lit, during a high speed one man show. Earl Lind attended as a nearby witness.
