Uintah County schools will not switch to War Time after April first due to bus ride discomfort for small children. The board prefers adjusting the school day to release students around 1 PM and extend farm work time, noting over half of 3000 students ride buses and some start before dawn. Continued on page four.
The Fighting Utes of Uintah remain undefeated after a home win over Duchesne Exiles, 33-21. Uintah opened 48-18 by third quarter, led by Walker with five baskets, and received solid scoring from Williams and Fowler. Roosevelt Rough Riders beat Leghorns 35-27 earlier as teens battled for momentum.
More than 600 visitors toured the newly completed Roosevelt LDS Hospital Sunday. The facility cost 865,575.83 and featured a reception at the home of Mr and Mrs H P Edwards for Uintah Basin doctors and officials. Notables among attendees included Dr J L Hansen Dr J M Francks and W S Henderson. The project&apos.s historical timeline noted LDS church approval in 1637 and construction milestones through 1941 with a current campaign to raise 4500 for equipment.
At East Lansing Michigan State College the 20th annual Partners Week highlighted advances in agricultural science with 200 scheduled events. Fritz Mantey of Fairgrove, a consistent winner in hybrid seed corn, demonstrated competitive crops and livestock topics in the event’s tense competitions.
The wool school runs next Tuesday and Wednesday in conjunction with the Ashley Woolgrowers Association convention at Uintah County court house. Directors William Peterson and Alma Esplin lead sessions with Utah State Agricultural College wool specialists and local speakers. Vernal Lions Club backs the event with a sheepherder banquet at Uintah High School Monday night after a 7:00 pm screening and talk. LB Mann of the Farm Credit Administration will address attendees as senior agricultural economist in livestock and wool.
Funeral services for Joseph A. McKee 84 longtime Ashley Valley rancher and stockman were held at the Grimes ward chapel with a Burton Ward group providing music. McKee, who settled Jensen Ward in 1884 and later served as bishop for 14 years, died February 6 at 1:18 p.m. at his home 9137 South West Temple Street, Salt Lake City. Burial followed after funeral rites.
A list of 29 draftees being taken to Salt Lake City for physical examinations is recorded. Names include Jesse Lynn Clark Eldred J Jawis E Collier John Milton Karl Antone Lind Clarence Robert Yates and others. Some were noted as already in Salt Lake City or reassigned to Powell Wyoming for examination timing.
Mayor B. L. Stringham proclaims Vernal will conform with nationwide wartime efforts urging all citizens to align their conduct with national directives. The declaration follows the signing of a federal bill into law and calls for civic action in support of the war effort.
Eile Sannes, stenographer for Mira F E H Pullum, lists four grandsons in the armed forces stationed in California. She notes siblings Valeska Brewer and three brothers in Los Angeles and visits to Earnest, Arthur, John, and visits spanning Nor Dan Diego and San Francisco.
Uintah High seniors, led by American Problems class under Won L. McLonkie, raise defense bonds and stamps. Betty Anderson reports $413.05 in bonds and stamps, with contests across classes. Amer Legion Witbeck Post No. 11 donates $25. Post Commander Herri Lush praises efforts as drive aims to exceed $500 market with Governor Maw urging state participation.
Registration of men aged 20 to 45 to take place in Utah on Monday affects a wide range of residents. Major B.A. explains the draft power and how it could influence military service. The notice targets those born between January 17, 1897, and December 31, 1921. Continued on Page Eight.
The Roosevelt Theatre announces a grand opening on Valentine’s Day Saturday featuring a lavish new cinema and community playhouse. The 600 seat auditorium uses RCA sound, three inch wool and tapestry wall treatment for rich acoustics, with a peach green beige color scheme and red velour curtains. A climate controlled, fire‑proofed building includes an air washer and neon marquee. Opening feature is Chives Temple to Bathlech with shows at 3 p.m. Duart Campbell of Greystone, Colorado is listed in this notice.
A church gathering discussed welfare plans to fund bishops and supply aid to the needy and rehabilitate members through priesthood quorums. Elder Bennion urged that virtue comes from love and warned against greed and hate while urging familiarity with church history.
Washington D C Beb Senator Murdock and Representative Granger were notified that the farm security bond ban approved a project to improve and refinance the White Rocks Irrigation project in Uintah County. Funds totaling 25 000 were allocated for construction and another 25 000 to permit farmers to refinance their outstanding debt. Additionally the project aims to aid reconstruction and modernization efforts in the area.
