Vernal oil worker among 4 killed in Emery crash

A Vernal oil worker was among four people killed when two cars collided west of Green River in Emery County Sunday night. James Hall Cowley, 34, of Vernal, was employed by Equity Oil and died at the Price hospital. Also killed were Bob Barta, 31, of Montpelier, and Margaret Whitton Redd, 26, of Monticello, with seven others injured. Funeral services for Cowley were set for Vernal and Kemmerer, Wyo. Additional services will be in Vernal at the De Pauw Funeral Home. Survivors include his widow Amelia Gunther Cowley, of Vernal, his mother Mrs. Cowley of Salt Lake City, and three children. School Board to Accept Bids on New High School

Uintah District to solicit bids for a new Uintah High School in Salt Lake City designs by Lorenzo Young. Three bid categories electrical heating and plumbing and general contracting due March 18 at 7 30 pm local time. Plans available from Mr Young at Continental Bank Building. Building slated to start around April 1 and be ready for fall 1955.

Stores to close in Vernal on Monday

Vernal merchants announce closures this Monday in observance of George Washington’s Birthday. The notice lists year round holidays including Main Day May 22 Independence Day July 4 Pioneer Day July 24 Labor Day September 1 Thanksgiving November 25 and Christmas December 25. Some dates fall on different days this year.

Blood Drive Seeks 200 Pints at Stake Center

Volunteers urged to donate blood for the Red Cross Bloodmobile visiting Vermalext on Wednesday February 28. Donors can call 133-W 149-W to schedule, with blood drawn 12:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Donations support plasma serum immune globulin and other products for measles polio hepatitis and emergency needs.

Unemployment Peak Reached in Uintah Basin Declines

Unemployment probably peaked this week in Uintah Basin and began to drop says Spencer C Heiner manager of the Local employment security office. The week ending showed 161 unemployment insurance claims vs 180 prior, with 27 initial claims down from 32. About 378 workers seek jobs through the office and 75 to 80 percent of unemployed are registered. Employers urged to list openings while labor supply remains large and quality good as business improves.

Echo Park Dam Backed by Interior Plan in California

Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay urged a middle ground approach to water policy and endorsed the Colorado River Storage Project with a dam at Echo Park inside Dinosaur National Monument. Standard Oil completes last planned Red Wash well at Sted Wash

Standard Oil of California completed the final planned development well at Sted Wash Field in the Green River formation Red Wash area. The well produced up to 412 barrels per day via a 74 inch choke with sand tracing. reliability of future flow is uncertain as many walls in the field remain shut in for lack of outlet.

Streets to Be Opened Before Uintah High Construction

City Council and the chamber committee plan opening two street right of ways on the west side of Vernal to enable Uintah High School building. Streets Sixth West from Main to Second North and Ninth West from Main to First are slated for survey to provide an accurate description. A petition seeks city deed of the right of way. A new survey is needed due to errors in earlier plans.
