Telephone Co Files Request for Higher Rates in Utah
The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co asked the Utah Public Service Commission in Salt Lake City for rate increases totaling about $72,000 a month in Utah, with after tax gains near $43,000 monthly. The filing notes $12.41 million in Utah construction since the war, expanding telephones by 55,386 and long distance circuits by 8,550 miles, adding 730 employees, and predicts further programs including 20,000 miles of wire in cable for 1949. The company cites wage-driven cost rises outpacing revenues, with intrastate earnings in 1948 at 3.5% on original cost and only 3.0% projected for 1949, urging capital from stock sales to fund expansion.
