Tunnel Diversion of Green River and Flaming Gorge Work Milestone
A dramatic milestone in the Flaming Gorge project details the diversion of the Green River into a large tunnel to dry the site for the dam’s foundation. The article outlines the upper Colorado River project including the 450 foot high 1100 foot long concrete arch dam, 922000 cubic yards of concrete, and a 1962 completion target. It notes a 66 square mile reservoir, recreation and wildlife benefits, and early schedule for power plant units of 30000 kilowatts each with three 60000 hp turbines. Construction of the dam is planned to start in June 1960 with completion in 1964, seasonal work limits, and visitor overlooks to view progress.
