Uintah County gains access to federal flood insurance

Uintah County has been accepted into the National Flood Insurance Program effective immediately with a 30 day open period. Policies issued at subsidized rates cover homes up to 35000 and other residential buildings up to 100000 with 25 to 40 cent rates per hundred. The CNA Insurance office in Denver will service the area and maps of base flood elevations are to be published to extend coverage and double limits later under actuarial rates.

Auto Homicide Charged in Vernal Area Truck Crash

The Utah Highway Patrol charged the pickup driver with Automobillie Homicide after a westbound truck failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 40 near Valera's corner, flipping onto its top and killing Larry E. Nealy, 27, of DeQueen Arkansas. Driver Walter J. Martinez, 21, of Phoenix, and passenger Claytee Ray Wilkinson, 21, of McAllister Oklahoma, survived with injuries. The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Vernal Police and Uintah County Sheriff aided in rescue. Investigation continuing.

Vernal Drains Project Bids Due December 8

Bids for the Vernal Unit Block No 4A drains project in Ashley Valley part of the Central Utah Project will be opened December 8 at 10 am in the Bureau of Reclamation office in Duchesne. Estimated cost ranges from 100000 to 250000 dollars for two sections involving 6 and 8 inch corrugated plastic drain tubing, concrete or clay sewer pipes, earthwork and related installations. The first section is 0.5 mile plus extensive drainage work, the second spans 1.7 miles of tubing and 8 miles of pipe with earthworks and manholes.

Shoppers Kick Off Vernal Holiday Season Parade

Santa rides a red fire truck in Vernal Main Street parade drawing crowds of children and adults. The day included Santa at the courthouse for hours, photo opportunities, a turkey drawing with 65 turkeys given at 11 am and plans for three more Saturdays. A Christmas decorating contest with 1 Sweepstakes winner and 4 sectional winners was announced for December 15.

Uintah County Budget Hearing Slates 1978 Adjustments

Uintah County officials set a budget hearing for December 5 to discuss the 1979 appropriations. A Monday meeting considered a 7 percent across the board wage increase, supported by most attendees but with elected officials included in the raise. Fringe benefits total about 27 percent of wages, while some employees favored higher fringe payouts.
