UBHS Colorado River survey led by Willam G McDaniel from Vernal returned Thanksgiving day after a hazardous voyage into Dark Canyon above Hite Utah. They navigated rapids from Fite to Cataract Canyon, descended a forty foot ledge by rope, and viewed the dam site near Robbert Roost and Orange Cliffs. McDaniel reports Dry Fork Sinks project elevations mapped and lower sections to be completed by January.

Herold E Merkley, son of Mr and Mrs Bellis Merkley of Salt Lake City and former Vernal resident, will receive his M D degree from Duke University School of Medicine on December 3. He and his wife Eveline Prusse of Provo will depart North Carolina for the West, visiting Salt Lake City and Provo before Denver for interne work. Born in Vernal January 21, 1912, he graduated Uintah High School in 1920 and earned an A B degree from BYU in Provo in 1938.

Amputation Following Mine Accident In Jordan District
Acel J Walker lost a leg above the knee after a gilsonite load struck him at the Bonanza mine. He was moved to Valley Hospital where doctors report he is out of danger. His wife Meda and relatives remain at the hospital as colleagues James Anderson Jr and others assisted in the rescue. The incident occurred while loading gilsonite and sheltering under mine timber. Separately a freight train collision injured fourteen Riverton students en route to Jordan High, with several unnamed students unaccounted or awaiting records.

Nursery School Supervisors Injured in Car Crash
BRIGHAM CITY Salt Lake City residents Olive Hale 21 and Joy Wiswold 21 were injured about 8 30 pm Sunday when their car overturned three times a mile south of here. Hale had a bruised left shoulder Wiswold suffered cuts and bruises to her left leg. The crash happened when the two women driving south tried to avoid a car driven by Des mond Christensen of Brigham City turning into the westbound lane. Hale swerved to regain her side of the highway and the vehicle overturned.
