Death of Dr Frederick J Pack Noted Utah Geologist

Dr Frederick J Pack of the University of Utah died at 5:16 PM from septicemia. A noted authority on groundwater and earthquakes, he commanded a premier dinosaur collection and helped establish a major geology museum west of Chicago. Born February 2 1875 in Bountiful he influenced education and paleontology, authored works, and urged Utah fossil preservation amid calls for a state museum.

UHS Basketball Tour Schedule Announces Outing Details

Juniors Plan Christmas Street Decor Expansion

Junior Chamber of Commerce members in Vernal plan a major Christmas decor program with Vernel to receive a new dress in bright colors. A Dec 10 completion date is set with a committee led by Weldon Mutt Carroll to supervise. They will add larger globes, a skyline display on the Federal Building Uintah State Bank and Bank of Vernal towers, and seek community decorating support.

County Commissioners Set December 12 For Budget Hearing Date

County commissioners announce the 1938 budget hearing for December 12 at their November 30 session. City officials discuss telegraphic service after Uintah Railway abandonment and joint postal telegraph/Western Union arrangements. The city and county plan road paving and curb work as a WPA project with shared costs. A first west street lot near Abe Hateh sells for 52000 to Dave Ellis. The meeting also covers tax matters and the Uliah State Bank declares a 4 percent semiannual dividend payable December 16, 1933 to aid stockholders with taxes.

Hunter Saved When Horse Falls Off Cliff

Alfred Elilfritz of Roosevelt escaped injury when his horse slipped on a snow trail near Tabby hereditary Duchesne River head. The horse tumbled 60 feet into a ravine, Elilfritz freed himself from the saddle and survived as companion hunters Atwood of Vernal aided. The captured lion was brought to Vernal, measured seven feet. The trio and their hounds plan winter trapping in the Ulotah Basin.

Construction at Fort Duchesne Offices Under Way

The Uintah and Ouray Indian Agency builds new offices to be ready early spring. A $25000 frame building rises in front of the current structure, heat supplied for both buildings. Local contractor Bus Hatch leads the contract with Indian labor favored, Ashton Brothers supplying most materials.

26 UHS Students Attend Meet Held at Provo

Twenty six students from Uintah High School joined three faculty advisors for the Sixth Annual Conference of Junior Scholastic Journal. The event drew 30 students and 62 advisers from 52 high schools with memorial tributes, journalism talks, luncheons, and panel discussions. Oil Company Builds Tanks On Utah Colorado Border

Equity Oil Company of Salt Lake City constructs four storage tanks with 10000 gallon capacity each on the Utah Colorado line along U 40 to hold crude oil during good weather when roads to Rangely are impassable. Two trucks carry 4500 gallons and two carry 5500 gallons, enabling continuous hauling. Crude moves Rangely to Salt Lake City for refining and sale in Utah and Wyoming. The Rangely well is leased by Equity Oil, led by president Mr Dugan, with main offices in the Utah Construction Building in Salt Lake City. The mobile fleet raises questions about establishing a Vernal refinery.

Vere nal Milling company ships in hard wheat to improve local flour blend due to a hard wheat shortage in Uintah county. Practically all local wheat is soft, so the mill imports a hard variety and pays a premium of 10 cents per bushel.

County book drive seeks used books for circulation

Uinton County recreation leaders organize a book drive soliciting used books from individuals and groups. Books will be repaired cataloged and circulated through reading rooms and playgrounds with Mrs Jes ale Wall supervising and Mervin Hortocks Cecil Massey Manfred Rasmussen and Lowell Robbin aiding.
