Oil finds and drilling activity near Naples and Ashley Valley

Equity of Co reports Weber sand at 4921 feet in Kendall No 1 near Naples with 20 feet in place and plans to plug back to the Phosphoria lime. Stanolind Oil notes USA No 5 and USA No 7 wells in Ashley Valley field underway, with Jimmy Stewart well drilling and prep to bring USA No 7 in.

Plan for Uintah Junior Livestock Show Assets and Leaders

Virtus McConkie of the Better Uintah Beef 4-H club urged youth stockmen to start planning for the Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show at the county fairgrounds in early June next year. He advised breeders to prepare lambs and for pigs to have sows bred, noting cattle are in the Uintah mountains and suggesting coordination with livestock men. McConkie offered assistance, and the club plans to split its 35 members into new and sectionalized groups.

Daniels Canyon Fire Contained After Wind-Driven Spread

A wildfire in Daniels Canyon near Heber destroyed 600 to 1000 acres of mountain mahogany and deer forage. The blaze started by a cigarette or match Friday and was controlled Sunday, but high winds forced a rekindling Monday. About 100 men helped regain control as six small fires burned in Ashley National Forest with favorable winds and rain aiding suppression.

Vernal Merchant Carnival Nets $90,000 in Three Days

The Vernal Chamber of Commerce hosted a three day carnival of values that drew Vernal residents and nearby shoppers. Merchants reported about 50 percent more business than the prior year as free matinees and value offers attracted crowds. Rae Ashton praised buyers and noted the event aims to boost local spending and sustain regional commerce.

Mail Delivery Planned for Oct 1 by PM

Verna Ely plans delivery service to begin by Oct 1 pending solid plans. Postmaster Pontha Calder says the Ver nal post office awaits sorting cases and more mailboxes at convenient spots. Residents should post house numbers and boxes. delivery will cover most of the city once sidewalks and boxes are in place. Carriers deliver mail to establishments but cannot pick up due to workload.

Bert Hodgkinson Services Conducted Here

Funeral services for Albert Edward Hodgkinson 64 of Vernal and former Calder Bros Creamery employee who died after a lingering illness were held Wednesday at 1 pm in the Second Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was born Feb 14 1885 in Vernal the son of William and Hepzibah Hodgkinson and married Katie Nye in Vernal Nov 28 1907 who survives. He was an LDS high priest and survived by nine children eleven including Harland Aubra Carl Hodgkinson Ruth Winn Elva Richards Varian Hodgkinson Adrian Hodgkinson Valene Doyle Donna Tidwell and others. twenty three grandchildren. three brothers and four sisters. Burial was in Vernal Memorial Park.

Lieutenant Woolley Returns on Furlough After Training

Lt. Earl Woolley, son of H. Walter Woolley, is spending a furlough here after completing officers candidate school at Fort Riley Kansas, where he received his commission. He will report for duty at Fort Benning Georgia, a paratroop base.

Honeymoon Duo Held in Oklahoma for Kidnapping and Robbery

Otis Woodring and Velma Waddring, a newlywed Oklahoma couple, are jailed on charges of second degree kidnapping and armed robbery. Woodring, 24, Snyder, and his wife, 20, were brought to Fourteenth District Court after a preliminary hearing winding through Green River Wyoming arrests. In Senate details, a $10,000 bond was set for Woodring. Authorities continue investigations into related crimes and a separate homicide case in Vernal.

Jaycees Plan Construction of New Tennis Court

Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce officials announced a concrete tennis court will be built at the city park with funds raised by the Jaycees. The court will serve as both tennis court and skating rink and should be ready for use next week on the site of the old court.

4 H Fair to Be Held at Vernal Utah

Uintah County 4 H Club announces the fair at the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal on August 30 and 31. Mrs Sadie McConkle serves as general chairman with exhibits in clothing foods forestry gardens and home improvements due by 10 p m August 30. Judging begins the same day and the public can view from 3 to 5 p m. August 31 features demonstrations and a style dress revue at 2 p m with winners advancing to the Utah State Fair September 16 24.

Hunting Services Set for Thursday

Funeral services for Nathan Henry Hunting 27 of Vernal will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Naples ward chapel LDS Church with Ross Merrell officiating. Born June 9 1922 in Vernal he was a son of Earl and Phyllis Williams Hunting. A Uintah high graduate he served two years in World War II then worked for Hi Way Service and as a farmer. He leaves his parents six brothers Earl B Max Oran Dell Allen and Mrs Minnie H Welborn all of Vernal and burial is in Vernal Memorial Park under Sunset Lawn mortuary Salt Lake City.

Four LDS Stake Convention Noted

Annual Relief Society convention for the Uintah Basin stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be held Friday at the Roosevelt stake tabernacle. Uintah Central Dairymen's Cooperative Association, with about 200 farmers, has assumed management of Calder Creamery Co. Edward Aycock named manager.
