Bonanza Oil Plant Test Set for Next Week

Ernest F. Goodner announces the Bonanza plant near Vernal will begin testing on Wednesday August 24 at the American Glibronite facility valued at $300,000. Located 50 miles southeast of Vernal, along the Rangely Salt Lake pipe line, the plant aims to produce 300 to 500 barrels of oil daily using a process that dissolves gilsonite into oil under pressure. Further operations may lead to a large production program for high grade oil products.

Vernal Youth Slugged and Robbed After Flagging Stranded Motorist

John Kolter Sr. was halted near U.S. 40 and Ioka road west of Roosevelt on Tuesday night as he stopped to aid a supposed tourist. He was struck in the head and later knocked unconscious by a blunt instrument, waking the next morning in his car with an empty wallet. He recalled hearing a woman’s voice in the attackers’ vehicle and noted one assailant was of medium build, dark, with facial scars.

Schools Renovated Ahead of September 6 Opening

Most county schools will reopen with a “new look” after renovations under Supt H M Lundell. Improvements include new floors painting and repairs at Central Naples Jensen Maeser Avalon Tridell Lapoint Alterna High Uintah High and other sites. District crews work to finish before the opening while a planned Central school expansion progresses.

Red Canyon Access Road Nears Completion Near Green River

A Forest Service project in Ashley National Forest builds a 1.5 mile road along Cart Creek toward Red Canyon opposite Dutch Johan draw to aid a Bureau of Reclamation survey for a proposed dam site. Max Cluft oversees the work with Ward Evans in charge. two cars and four workers. The road, part of an all year Vernal to Green River route, opens up a deer hunting area for October season.

Clifford E Young To Speak At Uintah Stake Conference

The Uintah stake quarterly conference opens Saturday evening with a priesthood and leadership meeting at 8 oclock at the Stake Center Third ward meetinghouse. Elder Clifford E Young of the Quorum of the Twelve will address Uintah stakers at Sunday services at 10 am and 2 pm. The Stake MIA plans a Sunday 8 pm program honoring missionaries with a special presentation.

Fisherman Dazed by Fall Is Safe

Dick Pierson a mechanic and John Johnson were fishing about 20 miles northwest of Vernal when Pierson slipped on a griff edge and hit his head losing consciousness. After a failed dusk search Johnson enlisted George Massey and DeVere Carroll. Pierson woke at daylight six miles from the fall, built a fire and heated bacon for breakfast before returning.

Duchesne man shoots wife then himself in murder suicide

In Duchesne County, John Arthur Giles, 34, killed his estranged wife Phyllis Hicken Giles, 34, with a 30 caliber rifle near their home after an early morning argument. He then shot himself at a distance of about ten feet, ending their directions after a separated July divorce. Funeral services for both were scheduled for Wednesday at 1 pm.

Garden Club Praised by Utah State Leader for Rose Growth

At a Vernal Garden Club meeting, C. R. Walter, president of the Utah Association of Garden Clubs, claimed Utah has the most rose gardens per capita, even more than Seattle. He noted Vernal’s high rose sales per capita and praised statewide garden club expansion. Fire Hazard On Forest Well Into The Critical Stage

With dry hot weather the Ashley National Forest reaches a critical stage and warns campers and travelers to use extreme caution. Five fires have occurred this year from May to August across Dowd's Hole Hell Canyon Whiterocks Canyon and Potter Lake. All were minor, under a quarter acre, thanks to rapid firefighting. Two rangers are detailed to larger fires in Reno and Boise as part of a regional policy to train younger officers for emergencies.

Two Day Polio School Held at Uintah County Hospital

A two day polio emergency treatment course will run at Uintah County Hospital starting 9:30 a.m. each day, August 25 and 26. We urge registrations with Mrs Coke Jeffries or Mrs Floyd Hall, under Utah National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, to train volunteers for potential polio outbreaks.
