Pony Express Revival Planned to Vernal with 7500 Dollar Prize
A revived Pony Express and Wells Fargo relay spans from St Joseph Missouri to Sacramento California with a 7500 dollar prize split 5000 for the winning team. Utah riders include Gardner Killian Elmer Les Gardner and 17 year old Myrtla Gardner. The Vernal station is at Central school with plans for 44 hours to cross Utah. The Cavalry team will use horses from Fort Riley and Fort Laramie and follow the same relay format.

A Monday morning meeting of Vernal business leaders chaired by Colton launched a fundraising effort. The committee set a goal of 698 dollars with 200 from Uintah county and Vernal city, plus additional subscriptions gathered by committees to be appointed. Local businesses and individuals pledged varied amounts, including Uintah State Bank 40, Vernal Express 167, Uintah Abstract 10, Uintah Telephone 16, Uintah County 250, and Vernal City 50, among many others.

Mourning Stamps Honor Harding From Nation
Washington reports that Black mourning stamps will be issued by the post office department to honor the late President Harding. The seals will resemble current stamps in size, feature a likeness of Harding, and will be distributed in coming weeks with no end date specified. Existing 2 cent stamps remain valid. Postmaster General and President Coolidge endorsed the plan with Coolidge selecting two preferred designs.

N J Meagher cashier of the Bank of Vernal gave 1200 dollars to the Catholic church of Vernal to help pay part of the debt on property recently bought from Mrs Sarah D Mease that became a parish chapel. Uintah County High School to Open With Nine Month Term
Uintah county high school will begin on Tuesday September 4 for a nine month term. All four grades will be taught in the former Uintah academy building with ninth grade students housed in Vernal. Eight teachers form the staff led by Principal W A Paxton a BYA graduate with postgraduate work. Others teach English domestic arts agriculture social science accounting stenography and more. The move from Uintah academy to the high school and crowded freshman classes create early problems to solve before school starts.

Power Site Application Filed for Pole Creek Venture
The Wintah Power and Light Company of Vernal filed with the state engineer on August 20 for the use of twenty second-feet from Pole Creek via a flume and a 36 inch pipe to develop 760 horsepower. Water would be returned to the Uintah River, creating a 435 foot head for distribution to several cities in Duchesne and Uintah counties. The application is signed by W N Coltharp, president.

Victory Highway Manager Makes Visit to Vernal
Ban Blow vice president and manager of the Victory Highway visited Vernal arriving Wednesday evening. He toured the Dinosaur quarry at Jensen on Thursday and attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting in the afternoon with another session planned. He left Friday morning for Duchesne and planned to be somewhere in Nevada when Pony Express riders pass over the highway to Sacramento.

John McKowen, a farmer once in Ashley valley, recalled being lured there 41 years ago to help build a regional railroad. He carried a regulation railroad spade with a wooden D handle, later replaced by iron, and said he would still use the tool to build the railroad when Governor Mabey spoke of future lines.

Indians Welcome Big White Chief on Friday
Governor Charles R. Mabey and Mrs Mabey arrived at Fort Duchesne to a unique welcome by Ute, with Indians in tribal dress, war bonnets, and beaded attire. An interpreter Acumine translated as the Chief spoke from horseback, expressing kinship through handshakes with whites. The crowd of 600 applauded as Mabey greeted the Chief and descended to meet many on foot and horseback at the stand.

Steel Bridge Promised Over Uintah River
Governor Mabey pledged a new steel bridge at the Uintah river crossing on Victory highway in Fort Duchesne. The bridge, to be funded entirely by federal funds on government land, costs 41000 including approaches and abutments. Aug 21 Price Utah Mrs Nick Bermis and Steve Pappas sustained back injuries when their car skidded off the Colton road and rolled over.
