Last Rites Held for 2 Highway Victims
Funeral services were held for Patricia Rosalie Gates aged 27 of Vernal and Terry Lee Darnell 23 of Meeker, Colo. following a beaten collision Friday near Dutch John Flaming Gorge Lodge. Gates was buried in Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery after a Wednesday service. Darnell’s body was sent to Glenwood Springs for services. both victims were reported alive at the scene but died later in hospital. The other car, a 1962 Buick wagon driven by Perry Vincent of Salt Lake City, was said to have been traveling north at high speed when it left the road.

Five Injured When Car Rolls East of Vernal
Five persons from Oxford New York sustained bruises abrasions and minor lacerations Friday after a Chevrolet station wagon slid on a rain slick U S 40 about 25 miles east of Vernal. The car rolled into a barrow pit after skidding 16 feet, injuring occupants including driver Mrs Fumiye Sumida and owner Takao Sumida. They were treated and released at Ulotah County hospital. No citations issued. Utah Highway Patrol Trooper BR Thetm led the investigation.

Gorge Picnic Tuesday to Host 50 New Teachers
About 50 new teachers will be hosted Monday during a Business Education Day sponsored jointly by the School District and Vernon Chamber of Commerce. After an excursion around the valley a picnic will be held at 6:16 p.m. at Split Mountain Gorge. The events were announced Tuesday at the regular weekly Chamber meeting.

A gravel-dumping truck caused damage to a car eight miles east of Vernal at the U S 40 Ashley Creek bridge intersection last Thursday at 10 a m. The 1957 Mack tractor, owned by Intermountain Concrete and driven by Thomas Merbert 52 Route 1 Wasating westbound on U S 40 lost its tailgate scattering gravel striking Alfred Feldmann s 1960 Studebaker windshield and headlamps. No citations were issued. Trooper Ray Herrington investigated.

Fire at Naples depot sparks $40,000 in losses
A warehouse near Naples owned by Ashton Bros. Co. burned Monday afternoon, with oilfield supplies and chemicals valued between 40,000 and 50,000 dollars. The fire started in a neighboring field’s grass and weeds and spread rapidly, drawing firefighters at 4:15 pm. Fire crews worked overnight until 4 am Tuesday to prevent further outbreaks as debris was hauled away.
