Vernal's new 1 700 000 direct distance dialing telephone system goes into operation Saturday midnight. Final testing and customer education wrap up this week as city leaders attend a launch ceremony at 7 20 p m in the new office. An open house in September will welcome the public.

About 150 family and friends gathered in Vernal to honor 100 Vernal Area National Guardsmen who completed a year of active duty at Fort Lewis Washington. General Maxwell Ey Rich praised the unit as the best in the battalion and said regular army officers at Fort Lewis commended them highly. Speeches by S Herold McKee and Mayor Alvin Kay and remarks by COL WM H Thompson highlighted the event. Refreshments and dancing concluded the program.

Uintah High School Year Schedule Announced
Uintah High School will start the 1962-47 school year on Tuesday September 4 1962 for about 330 students. Principal Leland Rex outlines registration by class from August 18 to August 28 with daily hours 830 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm. Seniors register August 18 and 19 juniors August 20 21 sophomores August 22 and 24 final make up August 28. Fees include activity tab locker and class fees with books sold at reduced prices and some new titles. KSUD Radio Station will provide engineering services. Rex previously worked at KVEL.

Planning for a major junior high expansion includes remodeling corners of existing buildings and converting an older building to classrooms. Six buildings will host classes with about 5000 placements in seven daily periods. Car Wreck Injures Driver Near Jensen on U S 40
A 1957 Chrysler sustained 300 in damages Saturday at 2 05 p m eight miles east of Jensen on U S 40. Nerbert B Courtwright 24 of Jensen was driving west when his car ran off the pavement edge and struck an embankment. He was cited for failure to keep his vehicle under control. Trooper R M Mele of the Utah Highway Patrol investigated.
