August Employment Reaches Record High

August employment in Uintah Duchesne and Daggett counties hit a record level with 8700 workers. The Uintah Basin remains strong, unemployment is among Utah’s lowest, and skill shortages persist in services. Forecasters warn 1962 may not match 1961 but expect a solid remainder of the year. Indiana University student JOSEPH G. Jorgensen won a Ford Foundation grant to study Ute language preservation and writing systems. He aims to analyze Ute sounds and attach symbols to help the Utes write their language.

Advisory Board to Discuss Grazing Fees in Utah

Two Cars Damaged In Vernal Collision Tuesday Night

A two vehicle crash on U S 40 near Vernal at 10 20 pm Tuesday caused about 400 dollars in damage to a 1956 Pontiac Delrey and left a 1949 Chevrolet Sedan total loss. Driver Gary L Slaugh 17 Jensen cited for improper left turn and Thomas D Colling 21 Vernal cited for reckless driving. Trooper R M Helm investigated.

Uintah Stake Conference Set for September 8 and 9

Uintah Stake Conference will be Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9. Elder Thorpe B. Tsancson, Assistant to the Council of Twelve Apostles, will be the visiting General Authority, accompanied by Elder Donald Ellsworth of the General Welfare Committee. General sessions are Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Stake President Frank B. Walker will preside. Saturday at 6:30 p.m. a welfare meeting, followed by a Priesthood leadership meeting at 8:00 p.m. All ward and stake welfare committees are expected to attend. Uintah County Fair Opens This Weekend At Armory

Uintah County's annual county fair runs Thursday through Saturday with exhibits in crops, gardens, home arts, flowers, and fine arts. Roosevelt 3rd Ward defeated Centerville 14-8 in Salt Lake City in the All-Church slow pitch tournament. The win marked Roosevelt 3rd’s fourth straight. Vernal area eyed for 15 million biblical movie

Forest Service reports three fires on Ashley National Forest over the past week, two on Friday and one on Sunday. A 3 acre fire in Hagle Creek, a 40 acre blaze on Indian Mead Peak, and a 5 acre fire in Chokechurry Canyon were extinguished. George Stevens Productions, a Culver City film company, eyed Vernal area for major sequences of a biblical spectacular, with $1 million spent on site reconnaissance and planning. Movie officials toured Dinosaur National Monument and Island Park, Steamboat Rock, and Harpers Corner, noting Island Park’s proximity to Vernal as favorable for future filming. The project adapts The Greatest Story Ever Told.

Matvey's Cafe east of Vernal on U S One reported burglars entered Saturday night or early Sunday morning. A window was found broken and the safe taken. No suspects named.

Cart Creek Canyon arch bridge linked in Utah project

Two massive arched sections of Cart Creek Canyon bridge joined forming an arch that will carry Utah's longest single span highway. Engineers witnessed the joining as work shifts to the suspension system with 14-inch hanger cables and 28-foot decking. The 530-foot two-lane bridge sits 300 feet above the canyon as Flaming Gorge water rises toward the deck. Total cost 750000 and material use includes 1300 cubic yards of concrete 200000 pounds of reinforcing steel and two million pounds of structural steel.

The No 3 Unit in section 33 twp 185 ree 22b flowed 2 500 MCFG D from the Dakota sand at 5300 333 feet depth. Top Dakota logged at 5300 feet. Drilled from 1800 to 3438 feet with air. No 1 Unit discovery completed by Great Yellowstone Corp with initial potential 4 500 MCFG D.
