Seaboard Plans Deep Oil Test Near Ouray Utah

Seaboard Oil company of Delaware moves ahead with a deep rotary rig test 20 miles southeast of Ouray Utah to evaluate new oil sands near Bittercreek and Whiteriver. Kerr-McGee contracted the well site near the Rangely line as officials report favorable preliminary studies and reduced transport concerns if successful.

Uintah 4-H Fair Rescheduled Into Late August Labor

Uintah Stake 4-H Club Fair dates moved to August 31 September 1 2 to avoid conflicts. Home Economics exhibits due August 30 or by 10 00 a m August 31 with group and individual projects including clothing foods and home improvement. State Fair entries limited by rules with fashion show and state contest qualifiers.

Indian Tribes Observe Sun Dance In Nevada Territory

In a special tribute to war dead a second Indian Sun Dance was held near Whiterocks over four days with forty seven participants. Attendees included Shoshones, Navajos from Arizona, Blackfoot from spake, and Utes from the Uintah. Observers noted a more serious mood than an earlier dance.

Permits Issued for Major Doe Hunt across Four Forest Areas

The Ashley National Forest opens a ten day deer season October 16. Permits for a 1500 female doe kill will be issued first come first served from September 27 at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse. Areas are Greendale Manila 300, Daggett Little Hole 350, Daggett Browns Park 250, Vernal Brush Creek 600. Open sale location is Vernal. Resident permit fee is $3 plus big game license.

Legion Convention Set for Cedar City Next Year

Vernal Post No. 11 sent nine members to the Utah American Legion Convention in Ogden where delegates chose Frank Riter of Salt Lake City as department commander. The convention adjourned late Saturday after telegrams of invitation from Vernal civic clubs and local officials boosted Cedar City for next year.

Rangley Salt Lake Oil Pipeline 30 Percent Complete

The 10 inch crude line from Rangely Colorado to North Salt Lake City is about 30 percent in ground with three crews laying roughly two miles daily. Salt Lake Pipeline Co Inc a Standard Oil California subsidiary reports 65 percent right of way cleared and 50 miles laid. Completion expected in 65 days with tests and November 1 finish target.

Utah Region Six P T A conference will meet at Vernal Central School Library on Saturday. National P T A representative Mrs. Emery from Atchison Kansas will discuss children and P T A contributions. Draft Will Call on In November

The nations peace time draft calls about 15,000 into service with the first group being 25 year olds and younger men drafted after. All 18 to 25 must register starting August 20 with eligibility for 19 to 25 under the draft law. Improved Vernal-Manila Highway Could Boost Park Access

Reading as a scenic route from Vernal to Yellowstone via Green River and Hoback Canyon, the improved Vernal Manila highway would provide a hard-surfaced, well-marked path to the park entrances. Wyoming and Utah agencies plan extensive paving and routing adjustments depending on Steinaker Draw reservoir decisions. Local groups seek continued road improvements to encourage tourist travel from Vernal and strengthen regional connectivity.

Vernal compact eyed to unlock Colorado River growth

The Colorado River Commission proposes the Vernal compact to allocate upper basin water for 412 940 acres. Water supply would cover 251 780 acres of new land with 161 160 acres for supplementary use and power facilities expected to generate 5 383 000 000 kilowatt hours annually. The Reclamation Bureau estimates total development cost around 930 million dollars at 1940 prices, higher today.

Nespelem man on vacation visits Vernal friends

Clarence Rose of Nespelem Washington visited friends in Vernal the late part of last week en route to the middle west on vacation. Rose left Vernal in 1934 and has since worked at Grand Coulee Dam in Washington in the power house of the Columbia Basin reclamation project.

Community Rose Garden Receives Commendation

Duchesne Boy Loses Hand in Power Line Accident

Mitchell, an encote son of Mr and Mrs M D Mitchell Apalco Duchesne county, was convalescing Monday at the LDS hospital Salt Lake after the stapulation of his right hand burned severely by contact with a power line near his home Saturday. The accident occurred on the Mitchell farm where the cable of a hay derrick came into contact with the electric line. The boy was reported in fair condition.
