Uintah Duchesne Amateur Rodeo and 4 H Club Fair Planned

Plans for the Uintah Duchesne 4 H club fair open Monday in Verial feature exhibits and demonstrations judged by Miss Rhea Jiurst and Miss Ruby Smith with senior winners going to the Utah state fair. The Vernal Rodeo and Race Assn stages an amateur rodeo Sept 3 and 4 at Uintah county fairgrounds with prizes totaling 200 per event plus two wild horse races and a queen crowning.

C R Henderson former city councilman and Vernal Lions Club president was named chairman of the Vernal planning board by Mayor Stringham after G E Andermann’s resignation. Future Draftees To Register By September 18

Uintah county men aged 18 to 25 must register for peacetime draft between Aug. 30 and Sept. 18 at Coltharp Building in Vernal. Alvin E. Weeks, member of the draft board, announced that men away from home may register wherever they are, with Uintah county listed as their home for processing by the county board.

Oil Interests Still Eye Uintah Basin Area Reports

Oil interests continue to monitor Uintah basin drilling as Equity Oil reports the Ashley structure near Jensen at 2166 feet with plans to reach 2700 to 3000 feet before testing and geologic work to 4000 4500 feet. Seaboard Oil advances near Bitter Creek area west of the Utah Colorado line while Ruth Nelson No 1 Crater Oil near Vernal shows very slow progress with water shutoff testing anticipated Friday.

Graveside Rites Planned for Bud Sturgeon Sunday

Graveside services for Ray mond W. Bud Sturgeon sea man first class killed in the Leyte Gulf action when a Japanese plane struck the USS Maryland on November 20 1944 will be held Sunday at 2 30 p.m. at Vernal Memorial cemetery. Born November 2 1923 in Roosevelt he was a Roosevelt High School basketball player before enlisting in the Navy at 18. Survived by his mother Mrs Ruth Winward Sturgeon and four sisters Mrs Winona Randall San Francisco Mrs Enid Tuggle Los Angeles Mia Beulah Richards Vernal and Mrs Beth Lewis Chicago the body will lie at the home of Mrs Sturgeon in Roosevelt Saturday and Sunday until services conducted by Witbeck Post No 11 American Legion of Vernal.

Funeral services announced for Loren R. Swain

Funeral services for Loren Robert Swain 25 who died Monday morning will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the First Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jesse A. Haws will conduct. Swain a World War II veteran was born March 11 1923 in Vernal. He is survived by Leona Blood Swain a son Greg and five brothers and his parents. The body will be cremated in Salt Lake City and the burial is planned at a Fort Feist cemetery with grave prayer by Homer Robertson.

Uintah Girls Run National Forum Tour in D C

Uintah Board of Education readies plans for school opening Sept. 6. Utah delegates Nancy Colton and Carma Fellows joined a cross country forum visit in Washington with leaders such as President Truman and Secretary Marshall. Uintah Stake Conference Draws Large Crowds and Mission Reports

Capacity crowds attended sessions of the Uintah Stake Quarterly conference with 1288 at the Sunday morning meeting. Elder Thomas E. Uintah high school to reopen with teacher lists posted

Uintah school board released the teaching assignments for the district as registration approaches. Principal and staff names span Maeser, Jensen, Fort Duchesne, and other schools with routes extending for extended registration. General student fees remain at two dollars and fifty five cents.
