A Utah opinion column warns that bicycle accidents threaten thousands of children and adults yearly. It calls for enforced traffic rules, registration and inspection of bicycles, and a public program to improve rider conduct and safety. The piece also notes a Utah State Press association outing to Green Lakes with praise for scenery and facilities.
Mrs. Mattie Collier Chivers of Davis Utah died suddenly Thursday morning from a heart attack. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Davis ward chapel with Bishop Wallace E Slaugh presiding. Burial followed at Vernal Memorial Park. She was born February 5 1892 in Vernal to Joab and Theodocia Collier and lived a long active LDS Church life. Survived by several children including Mrs Eva Simper and Acail.
Vernal Utah city council set a 16.5 mill levy unchanged from last year. Under C R Hopkins finance committee chair the plan totals 2.5 mills for general fund 5 for streets 1 for airport 11 for park and cemetery 575 for bond and sinking fund and 125 for bond interest.
The Uintah and Daggett counties saw 235210 trout planted this year by the state fish and game commission under Frank Griffin and Vernal Gun and Rifle club oversight. About 149210 went to Uintah and 86000 to Daggett, with 116560 brook trout fingerlings in Whiterocks beaver ponds and nearby lakes. During June, 67200 brook trout fingerlings were released in multiple creeks and lakes, with 51250 legal fish totaling 10250 pounds distributed across Ratliff spring and surrounding waters. Two trucks transport fish from Whiterocks hatches to streams in the Uinta mountains, and 850 pounds of legal-sized trout were planted on a recent Saturday in Elk Creek and adjacent creeks.
Vernal Utah seaman apprentice Roger D. Williams, son of Mrs. Wanda Young, serves aboard the attack cargo ship USS Chuban. He participates in the Navy Annual Resupply Expedition to St George and St Paul islands, 250 miles north of Dutch Harbor Alaska, amid ice conditions and a around-the-clock unloading plan aided by reconnaissance planes and Arctic midnight sun.
Mrs Rae Chivers of Ashley recently returned from a ten day stay with her husband in Walcott Wyoming.
The 1948 Uintah County Fair will run Thursday through Saturday September 2 3 and 4 with hundreds of 4 H youths competing in forestry garden home economics and contests at the Uintah County fairgrounds A possible night style revue may be held in town Winners in demonstrations contests and revue will represent Uintah County at the State Fair Special awards include gold medals for best dairy food demonstration and silver medals for style revue Blue ribbon exhibits will enter the state fair The home economics exhibits include demonstration contest style revue fashion show group exhibits from clubs and individual displays featuring clothing foods and home improvement
Uintah County commissioners set a 14.1 school levy, up 4.4 from last year, to fund a half million dollar Union High School near the Uintah Duchesne line by Roosevelt. The total county levy remains 41 mills. Maeser town levy 8 mills. Roads to Jensen cemetery may be improved. county workers wage scale fixed at 1.00 for regular labor and 1.25 for mechanics. County fair postponed to fall 1949 while 4-H fair proceeds. Community groups seek action on a Free Zoo racket and magpie campaign funds.
The Sunday Tribune reports a draft Colorado river compact creating a Colorado river commission to oversee upper basin operations. It sets apportionments among Colorado Utah Wyoming New Mexico and a fifth from the federal government with veto power by any two states and four-member concurrence. The accord details water rights storage and curtailment rules and allows inter-state property moves and subsidiary stream agreements.
Uintah school district board approves 8450 payment for an option on a 60 acre site in the west part of the county for Union high school. The panel also hires two custodians and awards bids for shingling Maeser and Jensen schools and for supplying about 30000 gallons of gasoline.
John Burnham Crapo 77 died at his Brigham City home after a lingering illness. Born February 23 1871 in Draper he lived in Draper St Anthony Idaho Metropolis Nevada Fillmore Roosevelt Vernal and finally Brigham City. He worked as a petroleum geologist and served as an LDS bishop in Kilgore Idaho and in Metropolis Nebraska and Parker Idaho bishoprics.
Oil Belt All Stars rallied from behind to defeat the Fishers Colored Ghosts of Sioux City Iowa 4-3 before about 900 fans at Jaycee Park. Victor Waite and Ladd hit early homers, Costly miscue gave the Ghosts a 3-2 edge, Homer Robertson tied it with a seventh inning run then Stark delivered a high bounder that allowed Robertson to score the winning run.
The Vernal city county asphalt plant five miles west of town is to reopen August 18. LeRo Taylor says a hammer mill and steam boiler are being installed to process asphalt for laying machines, with David Ellis in charge. The site sits atop 30 feet of high quality material, aiding downhill processing and hauling.
Graveside services for 1st Lt Norman T Johnson will be held Saturday at 2 00 p m at Mae ser Cemetery under the Third Ward LDS Bishop ric. He arrived from overseas August 12 with 1st Lt Marion J Woodfin of the Sixth Army Escort Detachment from the Utah General Distribution Depot Ogden Utah. Johnsons parents Mr and Mrs A Theodore Johnson recently returned from an LDS mission in Finland and cannot attend due to a serious operation. He was born November 4 1918 in Vernal and survived 25 missions including D Day landings in France. He earned the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and had been recommended for captaincy. Surviving are five sisters and one brother including Mrs Theora Whetten in Mexico City and Mrs Vera Vanleuren in Washington DC. Also mentioned are Mrs Davis W Lafferty and her baby son visiting from Philadelphia with Mr Lafferty’s parents in Vernal.
After sixteen years as Vernal city librarian Elizabeth Manker is replaced by Mrs Charles P Lewis. Manker is praised for her service guiding children and running the library. Lewis brings teaching experience and a library course from Utah State Agricultural College. The new library location in the former central school offers daily newspapers and other features.
