Uintah County schools plan classes for September 6 with about 3000 students returning. A teacher institute for Vernal is set for September 1 and 2. Registration at Uintah High is August 30 to September 2 evenings. Bus routes stay mostly the same with September reviews. Land purchases for Avalon and Uintah High expansion were approved. Ray Udy of Idaho hired to head on the farm training for veterans.

Vernal City Approves 16.5 Mill Levy and Election Plan
Vernal City Council set the 16.5 mill levy unchanged from last year. The levy includes 2.5 for general account 2 for public safety 5 for streets 5 for bond and interest 1 for parks and 1 for special improvement guaranteed funds. An election of city officers is scheduled for November 9.

Vernal firemen save bus from house fires on trip home
C R Jeffries and J S Milburn, fresh from Heber City firemen’s convention, rescued a bus in Duchesne when flames broke out under the dash. They pulled the fire under control with extinguishers and water, disconnecting batteries and dismantling the dash. Five hours passed before a Salt Lake bound bus arrived to take over, as other Vernal firemen at the convention assisted and elected officers.

Elder E. Young of the Quorum of the Twelve will be the principal speaker at the Uintah Stake quarterly conference in Vernal. Sessions include priesthood leadership meetings, with Sunday services at 10 12 and 2 30 from the stakes center to the tabernacle. The final evening program will be directed by the Stake MIA.

Carter Bids on Big Block of Indian Land
The Ute tribal council recommended acceptance of a Carter Ol Co and Continental Oil Co joint offer of 5.63 per acre on 4160.08 acres of land on the Uintah Ouray reservation near Duchesne. The council also considered other bids but took no action. A separate offer of 447000 bonus on 16509 acres near Bluebell was prepared for submission to Indian Affairs.
