Uintah County approves 1977 mill levy increases

Uintah County Commissioners approved and adopted the 1977 mill levy with increases for the district school levy from 45.82 to 46.57 mills and the county levy from 11.80 to 12.60 mills. The Mosquito Abatement District rate fell from 1.50 to 1.40 mills while other districts held steady. Total Uintah County levy rises to 63.57 mills with Vernal City at 67.7 mills and improvements adds 4 mills for several districts. overall county valuation dropped about 1.64 million to 60,009,638, prompting a conservative 12.60 county mill.

West area school registration period announced

All new and returning students at West Jr High and Todd Schools must register from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. August 15 to 19. The fee schedule lists 12.50 per student 7.50 activity and 5 book deposit, refundable at year end if books are returned in satisfactory condition. Class changes requested after August 19 will not be accommodated.

Head-on crash claims former Vernal resident Cooper

Former Vernal resident Lawrence Clark Cooper, 60, of Cedar City, died Friday afternoon when his 1974 AMC collided head on with Alice Winn, 45, of Vernal, on U S 40. Winn swerved into westbound lane, investigators note possible passing or lane change. Cooper's wife Inez, 58, Cedar City, also injured. both taken to University of Utah Medical Center in serious condition alongside Winn. Tri County traffic deaths for 1977 rise to 13, five more than 1976.

Vernal City Sets Mill Levy at 3.5 Mills in 1977

At August 3 meeting the Vernal City Council kept the mill levy at 3.5 mills matching 1976 level and directed revenue to the general fund. Bond redemption will not be funded from this tax. departments will bear bond costs though some general funds may supplement. The council also reassigned two surplus police vehicles and approved a John Robbins subdivision plus a 6 inch waterline extension. Police reports noted a $5,000 rise in property-damage losses from May to June.

Trucker pinned for hour and a half after crash near Jensen Bridge

David Cramer, 32, of Roosevelt, drove off U S 40 east of Jensen bridge to avoid rear ending cars, causing his truck carrying a full chemical load to overturn. He was pinned in the cab for 90 minutes while a rescue team freed him with a hacksaw, suffering a badly broken leg but reported in good condition.
