Madsen Visits Vernal Gun Club and Utah Fish Policy

D H Madsen state fish and game commissioner addressed the Vernal Gun and Rifle club with praise for Utah conservation. He announced a 1923 closed season on game birds in Uintah county with a quail ten day season in October and urged deputies of the club. The visit included a tour of Ashley valley noting its rich game potential and attracted elections of local members as deputy wardens.

Road Plans for Project No 10 B Delayed at Clerk’s Office

County Clerk Wilson Murray reports daily requests for Project No 10 B road plans and specifications. He says the state road commission advertised they would be available, but he has not received them and was told by the state road engineer the plans are not yet prepared. It appears the bid may be delayed again.

Man Who Fired First Shot at Gettysburg Dies

Alpheus Hodges, 81, of Jamestown New York, officially recognized as the man who fired the first shot of the Union army at Gettysburg, has died. His death marks the end of a noted Civil War connection tied to the 1863 battle and its opening volley.

Vernal Gun Club Plans Mountain Trip Advertising Endeavor

O J Grimes of the East Lake Tribune leads a Vernal Gun and Rifle Club financed expedition to Dry Fork with Supervisor Charles De Moisy Wilson Murray Bryant Stringham and Mayor Walter G Barnes aboard. The party will photograph Uintah and surrounding canyons and promote Utah tourism before Grimes attends the Fort Duchesne industrial convention next week.

Oil Strike Reported in Axial Basin Near Craig

Tourists report a flowing oil well near Craig in the Axial basin at the Hamilton dome. The Texas Oil Company well reached over 1700 feet with 600 feet of oil rising in one night. Drilling paused pending equipment. The strike sparked local excitement.

Uintah County High School to Open This Fall

Uintah County High School begins its first year on Tuesday September 4 for nine months with Prof. G A Paxton as principal. The former Uintah Academy building houses classes and the Sth grade is included in the high school tuition set at 10 dollars plus a 5 dollar student body fee. Seminary work will be led by Prof. George S Tanner a University of Utah graduate.

The Governor of Utah requests all business houses close and business suspended all day Friday August 10 1923. A one minute traffic suspension from noon to one minute after is ordered in honor of late President Warren G Harding. Proclamation received by County Clerk at 2 o'clock Thursday. Mail Truck Turns Turtle on Dugway

Ed Rollins a United States mail truck driver was injured when a truck left the road on a narrow grade near Duchesne while avoiding a tourist car. He protected his six year old son by pushing to the bank edge before the vehicle overturned. the boy was unhurt though fainted. Rollins suffered a serious arm injury from a broken steering wheel and other bruises. Mrs. Rollins rode to Duchesne for care.

Ver nal Gun Club to Release Chinese Pheasants

L. H. Allan president of the Ver nal Gun and Rifle club left Wednesday for Salt Lake City on business. Returning he will stop at the Springville hatchery to pick up 100 Chinese pheasants awarded by the state fish and game department. They will be released in the Ashley Valley.

Bootleg Still Found Above Tridell in Uintah County

A large second largest moonshine still was found in the cedars above Tridell by a cattleman. The 20 gallon capacity plant and several mash barrels were destroyed after the operator fled. Deputies investigated nearby Lapoint areas but made no arrests.

Work Starts at West End Tunnel

The Moffat tunnel begins construction on a six mile bore through the Continental divide linking Denver and Northwestern Colorado. A Kaufman leads 56 workers sinking test holes to locate solid rock for the tunnel mouth while preparatory camps and a three story headquarters rise near the Victory highway.

Vernal Delegates Attend American Legion Convention in Price

Vernal residents attended the American Legion convention in Price August 2 through 4 led by Don B. Colton. Delegates included William Witbeck and wife Lenutse Jorgensen, Mrs Leathle Rask ten, James Monaghan, George Geed nes, Dr H B Rich and wife, with George Goodrich serving as sergeant at arms. News of President Harding's death paused social events but delegates praised talks by National Commander Alvin Owsley and Dr Kate Barrett and called the trip a success despite the halt. Dr Rich was selected as one of eight Utah delegates to the national convention in San Francisco in October. The Vernal contingent also paraded in three decorated cars with Witbeck Poet No 11 banners, expressing hospitality toward Price.

County Officials Weigh Winter Road Levy to Preserve Mail Route

Uintah and Duchesne county commissioners met in a special session to seek an extra levy to keep Indian Canyon and Willow Creek roads open through winter so mail could reach the Uintah Basin. They postponed the levy, urging action by Utah’s congressional delegation in Washington.

Lee Jones Burickes of Uintah County faced jail charges after a shoplifting incident connected to the Asera Mercantile Company. He owed multiple sums and was arrested last Friday, with initial leniencies then revoked. Memorial services planned for late President Harding

Mayor Walter Barnes convened a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to arrange memorial services for Warren G. Harding. The services were set for Friday at the tabernacle with burial today in Maries, Chile. Committee members include Johan W. Davis Rev J M Hesesy and Dee C Thorne. Services begin at 8:00 a.m. with business laid to close from 9:29 a.m. and until after.
