Melvin Joseph Ballard longtime L D S official and leader among young members died Sunday in a Salt Lake City hospital after a month of illness. Born in Logan, he moved to Utah with his family in 1852 and helped establish the Ballard ward chapel. An eloquent pastor and mission organizer, Ballard served as regional vice president and chaired church youth programs.

Utah Oil Opens New Station Near Postoffice

Utah Oil Refining Company opens a new station on the corner southwest of the federal building in Vernal. Frank Sinkovitz will manage with Dez Pitt as assistant. the white stucco building houses three pumps, restrooms, an office, and washing facilities, plus auto accessories. The facility, designed by Glenn Findlayson and built by A L Peterson, is number 39 and features a large electric clock.

Indian Fair Theme Chosen For UBC Convetion

Theme chosen for the Uintah Basin Industrial Convention to feature an Indian Fair August 23 to 25 at Fort Duchesne. Experts will discuss agricultural problems and better methods in daily sessions under a circus tent. Pete Dillman Pioneer Scout Dies in Uintah Basin

Pete Dillman 85 a pioneer resident of the Uintah Basin died Tuesday at the home of his daughter Mrs John Houston of Whiterocks after a long life of teaching, forestry, and civic work. Born July 1 1854 in Bloomington he homesteaded near Vernal in 1877, helped establish Ashley National Forest, and held roles as teacher, druggist, and first government Indian farm supervisor at Whiterocks. He aided during the Marker massacre release effort and helped capture outlaws, served as Utah game warden 1904-1914, and planted extensive orchards and gardens. He survived by two sisters, a son, two daughters, 18 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. funeral was in Roosevelt with burial at Rock Point cemetery.

City Seeks Bids for Chlorinator and New Street Lights

Vernal City council on Wednesday night approved precautionary measures to guard public health by installing a chlorinating plant to prevent contaminated water and by adding equipment for the White Way lighting system. A bid call will seek a treatment plant and lighting gear with work slated for fall, following a state health board recommendation after water analysis showed negative results. State Slashes Farm and Grazing Land Values in Utah

The Utah State Tax Commission ordered a 19 percent cut in assessed valuation of irrigated farm lands in 23 counties including Uintah and a similar cut for grazing lands in five counties.
